WHY IS AIPAC BLOCKING DIVESTMENT FROM TERROR SUPPORTING COUNTRIES?

Why is AIPAC undermining attempts to financially isolate terror supporters? By Caroline B. Glick (JWR)

Josh Mandel is a first-term legislator in the State of Ohio's House of Representatives. He is also a US Marine Corps sergeant in reserves. Last year, Mandel arrived at the state house after a tour of duty in Iraq. There, he saw first-hand how Iran was fuelling the insurgency that is killing his fellow servicemen and Iraqi innocents. His experience led him to introduce a bill that would divest Ohio's public employee pension funds from companies that do business with Iran and fellow state sponsor of terror Sudan.

As his bill made its way through the various committees, Mandel's initiative received a body blow from an unexpected direction. AIPAC representatives approached him and asked him to pare down his bill's divestment requirements to include only companies that invest more than $20 million in Iran's oil and gas sector.

Mandel was surprised. Why should companies that invest in Iran's defense, telecommunications and other sectors be immune from divestment? AIPAC went over his head to Ohio's House Speaker Jon Hustead. Hustead amended the bill along AIPAC's suggested lines.

Mandel's experience is not unique.

FLORIDA DIVESTS FROM IRAN, SUDAN

Florida Divests from Iran, Sudan - Bill Kaczor
Florida's public employee retirement fund will divest nearly $1.3 billion invested with 21 companies doing business in Iran or Sudan, after the State Board of Administration authorized the divestiture Wednesday. The law bars investing pension money in any company doing business in Sudan or in Iran's energy sector because both countries are on the State Department's list of terror-sponsoring nations. (AP)

EGYPT KILLS 4 SUDANESE REFUGEES TRYING TO ENTER ISRAEL

'Egyptians killed 4 Sudanese on border' (JPost)
Egyptian soldiers killed four Sudanese refugees near the Egypt-Israel border overnight Wednesday in full view of IDF troops, a shaken-sounding IDF soldier said in an interview with Channel 10, Thursday evening.

According to the soldier, female IDF troops operating night vision devices identified several refugees approaching the border in an attempt to infiltrate Israel and alerted other soldiers who arrived after a few minutes in an army jeep.

However, Egyptian troops who also discovered the refugees, fired upon them, immediately killing two and wounding a third. A fourth refugee ran towards the fence and an IDF soldier stretched out his hands, trying to help him cross.

At that point, the soldier recalled, two Egyptian soldiers arrived and started pulling at the refugee’s legs.

“It was literally like we were playing ‘tug of war’ with this man,” the soldier said. The soldier eventually loosened his grip on the man, fearing the Egyptians would shoot him. “They were aiming loaded weapons straight at us, I was afraid they were going to shoot us,” he said.

The Egyptians then carried the man several meters away from the border fence, and proceeded to beat him and another wounded refugee to death with stones and clubs.

“What happened there yesterday was a lynch. These are not men, they’re animals. They killed him without even using firearms,” the soldier said. “We just heard screams of pain and the sounds of beatings. Then the screams stopped.”

SUDAN: JEWS BEHIND DARFUR CONFLICT

Sudan: Jews behind Darfur conflict (YNet)
Sudan’s defense minister, Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, has accused “24 Jewish organizations” of “fueling the conflict in Darfur” last week in an interview with a Saudi newspaper.

Hussein was interviewed during an official state-visit to the Saudi kingdom last week. A journalist from Saudi Arabia’s Okaz newspaper asked Hussein: “Some people are talking about the penetration of Jewish organizations in Darfur and that there is no conflict there?”

“The Darfur issue is being fuelled by 24 Jewish organizations, who are making the largest amount of noise over the issue, and using the Holocaust in their campaigning,” the Sudanese defense minister replied.

“Are these Jewish groups supporting (the rebels) financially?,” the interviewer from Okaz asked Hussein.

“Yes, they provide political and material support through their control over the media and across American and British circles,” Hussein said, adding that Jewish groups were using “all means to fuel these conflicts.”...

Several days ago, Sudan's Interior Minister, Zubair Bashir Taha, lashed out at Sudanese refuees who had sought asylum in Israel, and accused "Israeli authorities of encouraging the Sudanese refugees to come to their country."

He added that his ministry was "very confused" by Sudanese citizens who came to Israel."

The Sudan Tribune quoted a Sudanese refugee as telling al-Jazeera television: "We were surprised when we came here. We met good people, who welcomed us and gave us food. We feel that we are extremely happy. We hope that the Israeli government would find a solution for us and our children. We came here to look for a better place."

Israel to provide eye treatment for Sudanese refugees in Kenya

(Communicated by the MFA Spokesman)

MASHAV, the department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of carrying out Israel's foreign aid policy, will set up a special eye clinic similar to those it has run for many years in various parts of Africa.

Two Israeli eye doctors will be sent by MASHAV on July 2 to the Kakuma camp in Kenya, where dozens of patients will be operated on over a two-week period. The patients will stay at the camp for a short while before and after the operations. The doctors will also provide consultation services and assistance to local doctors. The required equipment was purchased by MASHAV and has already been sent to Kenya.

The Kakuma camp, near the town of Kakuma, is located in Kenya on the road to Sudan, west of Lake Turkana and about 50 kilometers from the Sudanese border. The camp, which has been in existence for 15 years, holds about 75,000 people, mostly Sudanese refugees.

Dr. Yosef Baratz, MASHAV project coordinator in Africa residing in Nairobi, will coordinate the project vis-a-vis the UNHCR and MASHAV headquarters in Israel

ISRAELI AND ARAB REACTIONS TO GENOCIDE IN DARFUR

Israel to Donate $5 Million to Aid Refugees in Darfur and Chad - Barak Ravid (Ha'aretz)
The Israeli Foreign Ministry intends to implement a $5 million aid plan for Darfur refugees in the near future. Israel will transmit $4 million to four aid organizations operating in Chad. The contribution will place Israel among the 10 largest donors to Chad refugees in the world in 2007.

Little Arab Pressure Over Darfur - Sebastian Abbot (AP/Washington Post)
Western countries looking for ways to pressure Sudan to curb violence in Darfur are getting little support from the Khartoum regime's Arab neighbors. Egypt, whose president met Monday with Sudan's leader, has the greatest influence with its neighbor, but analysts said it is leery of pushing Khartoum for fear of jeopardizing access to Nile River water and because of Arab sentiment against outside interference in the region.

P.A. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL SPEAKER: KILL ALL JEWS AND AMERICANS

Acting Palestinian Legislative Council Speaker Sheikh Ahmad Bahr, From Hamas, In Friday Sermon in Sudan: U.S., Israel Will Be Annihilated; Oh Allah, Kill the Jews and Americans 'To The Very Last One' (MEMRI)

The following are excerpts from a sermon delivered by Ahmad Bahr, acting speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, from Hamas, which aired on Sudan TV on April 13, 2007.

"America Will Be Annihilated, While Islam Will Remain"

Ahmad Bahr: "'You will be victorious' on the face of this planet. You are the masters of the world on the face of this planet. Yes, [the Koran says that] 'you will be victorious,' but only 'if you are believers.' Allah willing, 'you will be victorious,' while America and Israel will be annihilated, Allah willing. I guarantee you that the power of belief and faith is greater than the power of America and Israel. They are cowards, as is said in the Book of Allah: 'You shall find them the people most eager to protect their lives.' They are cowards, who are eager for life, while we are eager for death for the sake of Allah. That is why America's nose was rubbed in the mud in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Somalia, and everywhere."

[...]

"America will be annihilated, while Islam will remain. The Muslims 'will be victorious, if you are believers.' Oh Muslims, I guarantee you that the power of Allah is greater than America, by whom many are blinded today. Some people are blinded by the power of America. We say to them that with the might of Allah, with the might of His Messenger, and with the power of Allah, we are stronger than America and Israel."

[...]

"I tell you that we will protect the enterprise of the resistance, because the Zionist enemy understands only the language of force. It does not recognize peace or the agreements. It does not recognize anything, and it understands only the language of force. Our jihad-fighting Palestinian people salutes its brother, Sudan." [...]

"Oh Allah... Kill Them All, Down to the Very Last One"

"The Palestinian woman bids her son farewell, and says to him: 'Son, go and don't be a coward. Go, and fight the Jews.' He bids her farewell and carries out a martyrdom operation. What did this Palestinian woman say when she was asked for her opinion, after the martyrdom of her son? She said: 'My son is my own flesh and blood. I love my son, but my love for Allah and His Messenger is greater than my love for my son.' Yes, this is the message of the Palestinian woman, who was over 70 years old - Fatima Al-Najjar. She was over 70 years old, but she blew herself up for the sake of Allah, bringing down many criminal Zionists."

[...]

"Oh Allah, vanquish the Jews and their supporters. Oh Allah, vanquish the Americans and their supporters. Oh Allah, count their numbers, and kill them all, down to the very last one. Oh Allah, show them a day of darkness. Oh Allah, who sent down His Book, the mover of the clouds, who defeated the enemies of the Prophet - defeat the Jews and the Americans, and bring us victory over them."

ISRAEL PROVIDES HAVEN TO DARFUR'S MUSLIM REFUGEES

Sudanese Seek Refuge in Israel from Darfur - Jennie Matthew
Collective farms in Israel such as Kibbutz Maagan Michael today shelter scores of Muslim refugees from Sudan who walked to the Jewish state to flee persecution. More than 100 Sudanese are staying at 20 different farms. Sharon Harel, a protection officer at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said there are 330 Sudanese refugees in Israel, 90 of them from Darfur. However, authorities fear that setting a precedent could encourage hundreds of thousands of non-Jews from neighboring enemy states to seek refugee. (Agence France-Presse)

AHMADINEJAD: ZIONISTS ARE TRUE MANIFESTATION OF SATAN

Ahmadinejad in Sudan: 'Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan' (Haaretz)
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in Sudan late Wednesday that "Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan," state-run IRNA news agency reported. "The Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan," Ahmadinejad said during the state visit, speaking to a meeting of Sudanese Islamic scholars in the capital Khartoum.

Both Sudan and Iran are accused internationally of supporting radical Islamic movements.

"Many Western governments that claim to be pioneers of democracy and standard bearers of human rights close their eyes over crimes committed by the Zionists and by remaining silent support the Zionists due to their hedonistic and materialistic tendencies," the Iranian leader said.

Both countries do not recognize Israel, and Israeli citizens are barred from entering Sudan.

Ahmadinejad Blames U.S., Israel for Wars
(AP)
KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Iran's president blamed the United States and Israel for the world's problems Thursday in a lecture to Sudanese officials and intellectuals during his visit to Sudan.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments came as Iran and Sudan face mounting international criticism - Iran over its nuclear activities and Sudan over the conflict in Darfur.

Earlier, Iranian and Saudi media reported that the hardline president was planning a trip to Saudi Arabia in coming days. The rival countries have been holding talks for weeks in an effort to defuse conflicts in the region, including the sectarian strife in Lebanon and Iraq.

In his lecture Thursday titled "Iran and the World," the hardline president reiterated arguments that he has made repeatedly throughout the standoff with the United States and its Western allies over Iran's nuclear activities.

"There is no place in the world that suffers from divisions and wars unless America or the Zionists' fingerprints are seen there," Ahmadinejad told his audience in Farsi translated into Arabic.
