Why does Reuters give credibility to a one-sided and hateful blog story?

The Blogosphere contains a wealth of opinions and claims, some of which contribute to a rational debate and others which may be the personal rantings of a deranged individual. While freedom of speech requires a degree of responsibility that is sometimes lacking in blogs, reputable news services are compelled to comply with much higher standards.

So why, then, is Reuters publishing a blog posting entitled "Israeli Troops Given the Go-Ahead to Kill Peaceful Palestinian Protesters"? The posting reveals its true nature in the first line:

The Zionist regime has given orders to allow Israeli troops to fire live rounds on Palestinians protesting the illegal Apartheid Wall surrounding Jerusalem.

Continuing in a hateful and one-sided vein, failing to mention Palestinian terror or legitimate Israeli security concerns:

The Apartheid Wall, meant to strangle local West Bank economies and annex Palestinian land, started to encapsulate occupied Jerusalem in 2002.

Merely the term "Zionist regime", popularized by terrorist groups and individuals such as Iran's President Ahmadinejad, should have been enough to raise alarm bells at Reuters as to the unsuitability of such a posting. Not to mention the contents of the piece itself, which maliciously accuses Israel of actively seeking to kill Palestinian protestors.

Reuters includes the disclaimer: "The opinions and views expressed herein are those of the author and are not endorsed by Reuters.com." While Reuters may not endorse the sentiments of the blog posting, it still decided to publish them on its own site, therefore giving it unwarranted credibility as a news source.

Facebook Reverses Decision Moving West Bank Jews to "Palestine"
The social networking Web site Facebook, which had begun automatically listing Jewish residents of the West Bank as living in "Palestine," reversed itself Monday and now is allowing them to list themselves as residents of Israel. "I was surprised and disappointed to find that my hometown of Ariel is listed in Facebook as being part of a country called 'Palestine,'" Ari Zimmerman wrote in a posting on Facebook. "I am a citizen of Israel, as are all of the other residents of Ariel. We do not live in 'Palestine,' nor does anyone else." Brandee Barker, Facebook's director of communications, said users now can choose between Israel or "Palestine" as their permanent residence. (FOX News)

ISRAELI TOWN SUES GOOGLE FOR SLANDER

Israeli town sues Google over claim it was built on Arab village (Haaretz)
The northern town of Kiryat Yam is suing Internet giant Google for slander, a local official said Monday, because a feature of its worldwide map service shows the town was built on the ruins of an Arab village.

The dispute brings together two controversies, one old and one new. Officials from the town deny they displaced Arabs during the War of Independence, and Google is defending the practice of allowing any surfer to change information in its files.

Kiryat Yam is a town of 40,000 on the Mediterranean coast just north of the port of Haifa. An entry on Google Earth, a feature that allows users to zero in on locations around the world, alleges that the town was built on the ruins of Ghawarina, an Arab village.

Hundreds of thousands of Arabs fled or were expelled during the 1948-49 war. Pushing back invading Arab armies, the forces from the new Jewish state also overran Arab villages, destroying dozens.

Kiryat Yam was pulled into the dispute when a Google Earth user, Thameen Darby, inserted a note on the map saying it was built on the location of Ghawarina. Darby has inserted at least 10 such notes over Google's map of Israel.

"Kiryat Yam filed a slander complaint with Israel's police," said town official Naty Keyzilberman. "This obviously cannot be true, because Kiryat Yam was founded in 1945, he said, explaining the police complaint."

Darby, 30, a Palestinian doctor raised in the northern West Bank town of Jenin, said his mother was a refugee from to the village Balad al-Sheikh near Kiryat Yam. He said his contributions to Google Earth are part of the Nakhba - Palestinian Catastrophe information hub aimed to help displaced Palestinians understand their heritage or find the villages of their parents or grandparents. ...

Asked to respond to the police complaint, a Google spokesman said Google Earth depends on user-generated content that reflects what people contribute, not what Google believes is accurate. The spokesman would not give his name, in keeping with company policy.

The spokesman insisted that the altered map is not illegal, and Google's policy is not to remove such postings.

Who stands to benefit? That's the latest pseudo-scientific/sociological/political watchword when anti-Semites seek to blame Israel for modern tragedies.

What about 9/11? Of course it was "the Jews" - who else stood to benefit from making al-Qaida look bad? The hijackers were Saudis, you say? Irrelevant - leave it to Israel to recruit authentic Arab double agents to hijack planes and fly them into American landmarks.

It seems there's nothing that can't be blamed on the Jews - whether its missing Christian children during the Middle Ages - in the classic take on the "Blood Libel" - or the massive Internet outage that hit the Arab world over the past week. Well, not just the Arabs - India has had a lot of Internet problems, and Iran may still be 100 percent without Internet access after several underwater, fiber-optic cables were damaged or cut.

The outages, which many in the Arab world and the far-Left, hate-Israel community are already blaming on you know who, began about a week ago. A pair of undersea communications cables between Egypt and Europe - the data "lifeline" for much of the Arab world - broke about 8 kilometers off Alexandria's harbor, which was closed most of the week due to the massive storm that hit the region. India, which also uses the FLAG Europe Asia and SEA-ME-WE 4 cables, was severely hampered, wreaking havoc with much of the world's back-office data-processing, and leaving frustrated Americans without the technical assistance that India does so well. Banks in the Gulf region were hurting, and officials said it could be a week, maybe two, until things get back to normal.

Besides being used for fast Internet communications, the cables also carry digital phone calls and TV signals. So even the many people in the region who don't use the Internet were affected, as the legions of guest workers in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia couldn't make phone calls to family or transfer their salaries home to places like the Philippines and Pakistan (which had its own Internet problems). Several African countries that use the cables, as well as Egypt and Syria, were all out of Internet luck too.

And then there was Iran. On Friday, a third cable - maybe a fourth, according to some accounts - got cut in the Persian Gulf, slowing the already bottle-necked traffic that could still get through, and cutting off Iran. Curiously, according to the anti-Israel crowd, there were only two countries left unscathed by the cable fiasco: Israel and Iraq. (I read contradictory reports on Lebanon.) Hmm.

According to the companies that own the Mediterranean cables, the outage was apparently caused by the anchor of a ship that spliced a cable when it fell overboard. (I haven't heard any explanation yet for the Gulf cable.) Although it seems a little too coincidental, it's not unreasonable for weather related mishaps to occur in the middle of a major winter storm on the high seas. As far as the Gulf is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if this (http://tinyurl.com/yqf3ka) was the explanation.

Of course, logic never comes into play for these people; it's got to be Israel's fault. Well, I've got a theory of my own. Instead of saying that Israel and/or the CIA - which, as we all know, controls Iraq nowadays - deliberately cut the cables to isolate the Arab world, and especially Iran, and set it up for "something," I think it was the Arabs/Iran themselves that did the cutting to make Israel look bad by having something to blame on us. Or we could just call it a draw, and attribute the breakages to bad winter weather and infrastructure failure - not unheard of with underwater cables.

Why wasn't Israel affected? Simply because we use a different cable, with Egypt and company refusing to allow Israel to rent bandwidth on the same one it uses. Israel's cable is called MedNautilus (http://www.mednautilus.com), originally put together by a consortium that involved Israelis, but is now wholly owned by Spain's Telefonica.

CREATIVELY COUNTERING MEDIA BIAS AGAINST ISRAEL

What began six months ago as a brazen attempt to counter a perceived anti-Israel slant in the Dutch media, has evolved into a network monitoring the media in eight countries across the world. The idea is simple: Beat press bias at its own game by advertising only bad news about one place.

Over the past months, seven activists from Israel and elsewhere have been exposing online readers to scandalous yet accurate reports from media in Britain (violent drunk teens), France (high homeless mortality), Norway (serial child molesters), Finland (sexual harassment in parliament), Sweden (soaring suicide rates), The Netherlands (menacing Muslim unrest), Mexico (rampaging flood victims) and Los Angeles (drive-by killings).

The seven bad-news activists visit one another's online blogs and have incorporated links referring the dozens of surfers who visit their pages every day to sister-sites. Though they all act out of a desire to counter what they see as media bias against Israel, they operate independently and have little communication with one another. Some of them rely on friends to send them interesting bits of bad news.

"This project demonstrates how media coverage can degrade any country's image by using selective news without context," explains media analyst Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld from Jerusalem. His seminar last summer, entitled "Bad News about the Netherlands," became the kernel of his blog.

Virtual world "Second Life" opened a virtual Israeli community for its "Residents" on Sunday, allowing over 11 million users worldwide to teleport into a vibrant 3-dimensional Internet version of the country. "The purpose of Second Life Israel is to present Israel to a global audience beyond traditional media," said SL Israel founder Chaim Landau. "This is a concept of Israel as a fun, entertaining, thriving and diverse community for Jews and non-Jews, and a home for Israelis on Second Life."

As a Legacy Heritage Fellow at the European Union of Jewish Students in 2007, Landau initiated the Second Life Israel island with Beth Brown, a building and design manager. SYRIA BLOCKS FACEBOOK OVER ISRAELI "INFILTRATION"

Syria blocks Facebook over Israeli 'infiltration' (MSNBC)
DAMASCUS, Syria - Syrian authorities have blocked Facebook, the popular Internet hangout, over what seems to be fears of Israeli "infiltration" of Syrian social networks, according to residents and media reports.

Residents of Damascus said that they have not been able to enter Facebook for more than two weeks. An Associated Press reporter got a blank page when he tried to open Facebook's home page Friday from the Syrian capital.

Syrian officials were not available for comment Friday because of the Muslim weekend, but some reports have suggested that the ban was intended to prevent Israeli users from infiltrating Syrian social networks.

Lebanon's daily As-Safir reported that Facebook was blocked on Nov. 18. It said the authorities took the step because Israelis have been entering Syria-based groups.

Human rights groups have regularly criticized Syrian authorities for blocking opposition sites and Internet sites critical of President Bashar Assad's government.

The Economist reports that the Palestinians found another use for Google Earth:

The smugglers are almost always private entrepreneurs. They first select a piece of land close to the border wall and then dig a large hole with a mechanical digger. They then enclose an area of dozens of square metres and start digging, filling the first hole with the earth from the tunnel. They can map the length and direction of the tunnel accurately using satellite pictures from Google Earth.

Google Earth ain't just for rocket squads targeting Israel.

Last week several bloggers noted a Guaridan story that terrorists in Gaza were using Google Earth to target locations in Israel.

So when I saw this item, I thought, "Oh good, Google has responded to the concerns."

A tipster to Newsbusters shares the following info: A search of Google maps under "Israel" reveals a map that is completely devoid of any detail. Yet, neighboring Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and even Turkey all have cities and roads noted.

And indeed, if you click on the link, Israel is devoid of any details, unlike the surrounding countries. However, in the upper right hand corner you'll see a box divided into three sections with links to Map, Satellite and Hybrid. If you choose the latter two you can get some details. But if you zoom in too close you get the following message "We are sorry but we don't have at this zoom level for this region."

So it does appear that for some reason, Google Map is blocking some but not all detailed information on Israel.

However, at Seraphic Secret a commenter noted that Google Earth still has the detailed information that could be (and was) used by terrorists. So I guess I was too quick to give Google credit. (Although perhaps Google has more control over the map than over the satellite imagery.) Apparently Google hasn't addressed the problem of Google Earth.

THE YOM KIPPUR WAR - FOR KIDS!

Video games loosely based on historic wars are nothing new. But the recently released “October War,” which invites children to “fight the Israeli Air Force starting from Swais [sic] til Barliv [sic] Line,” offers a new twist to the genre: it is available exclusively on the Anwar Sadat website’s “Kids Corner,” thus making it the first war-themed video game to be released on the official website of a former head-of-state. Indeed, dedicated gamers will be disappointed to find that the Harry S. Truman Library’s kids page lacks similarly inappropriate atomic bomb video games, while other typically dry former head-of-state websites won’t even arouse their curiosity.

Compared to far bloodier video games, “October War” might seem harmless. In the two-dimensional game, players command a tank across various swaths of the Sinai Desert, shooting at an assortment of Israeli bombers, helicopters, trucks, and warships. The game seems deliberately unrealistic: the Egyptian tank is able to arm itself with nuclear weapons and laser beams, while a Star-of-David-clad, King Kong-like gorilla confronts players at the end of the fifth level. (On the other hand, just like in 1973, the Egyptian tank is severely overpowered and destined to lose.) Were it not for the Israeli insignias prominently displayed on every enemy vehicle, “October War” would seem like a more colorful version of Space Invaders.

But as “October War” represents an attempt to introduce children to the legacy of Anwar Sadat, it is a deeply pernicious game. By using the video game to emphasize Sadat’s surprise attack on Israel over his subsequent Nobel Prize-winning peace overture, the site’s webmasters are imbuing Egyptian children with disturbing nostalgia for Arab-Israeli war. Of course, “October War” merely reinforces the sentimentality for wars with Israel that Egyptian children would have been taught long before they got hooked on “October War.” Such sentiment can be found in textbooks and commemorative war murals plastered along Egyptian highways. Egyptian students enjoy October 6 holiday weekends and participate in school trips to the North Korean-funded October War Panorama (where visitors are told that Egypt defeated Israel).

This vitriol for Israel—even in a country enjoying nearly thirty years of peace with the Jewish State—is, pathetically, par for the course in the Arab world. One hopes, however, that young “October War” players will see the game—and persistent hatred for Israel more generally—for what it is: a distraction from their homework and, ultimately, a gross waste of time.

Abu Walid, a commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade in Gaza, showed the Guardian an aerial image of the Israeli town of Sderot on his computer to demonstrate how his group searches for targets.

The Guardian has filmed rare scenes inside Hamas-controlled Gaza - Hamas beating up Fatah dissenters, Palestinian doctors forced by their Fatah paymasters to go on strike or forfeit their salaries, the militants who log on to Google Earth to search for Israeli targets for their Kassam rockets. What these films show is not a Gazan population turning against the gunmen who took the enclave over by force in June, but its opposite - the hatred that Mahmoud Abbas is incurring among his own people. Expectations for the forthcoming peace conference in Annapolis are rapidly being lowered. It may now be put back to December. The star guest, Saudi Arabia, looks less, not more, likely to turn up. More than 10 rockets were launched at Israel from Gaza on Tuesday. A Ynet story from last week reveals that Arab internet users are flocking to Israeli pornographic websites. Up to 10% of their users arrive from Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority.

One site owner notes that Arab surfers particularly appreciate his movies with themes featuring female soldiers, female Mossad agents and policewomen.

Many Arab surfers reportedly, "asked if the female soldiers really serve in the IDF."

Said one site operator: "Porn will not bring about peace but at least we get some money out of our enemies' pockets."

The German-language website operated by the Jewish Agency was hacked into by an Islamic group in Turkey. The Agency confirmed that the group posted a hate message on the website and that data stored on the site may be lost. A formal complaint was filed with the German police. (Yael Branovsky)

TEXAS ISP HOSTS PALI ISLAMIC JIHAD WEBSITE

I wrote a piece last week for THE WEEKLY STANDARD about American internet service providers who host websites for jihadists. In the course of reporting the piece I came across an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Texas called The Planet. According to both MEMRI and a whois search, The Planet hosts the website of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

PIJ is designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the U.S. State Department for, among other things, killing 162 people by suicide attack over the last 12 years. There is more if you care to read it. The point is, PIJ is not a small, insignificant group. They're bad guys.

It should be noted that hosting the website of an FTO is illegal. As MEMRI points out:

section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act states that it is unlawful to provide a designated FTO with "material support or resources," including "any property, tangible or intangible, or services," including "communication equipment and facilities."

During the course of reporting the story, I interviewed Yvonne Donaldson, the PR director at The Planet. As I noted in my piece, when asked about her company's dealings with PIJ, Donaldson replied curtly, "We don't police the content of our websites."

I asked Donaldson if she was aware that her company hosted the website sarayaalquds.org. She said, "I've never heard of that website." I asked her if she knew of the site's connection to PIJ. She said, "I don't know anything about the site or this group." I asked her if she would like me to tell her about them. She responded, "No, I would not."

After a few moments of stunned silence--every other ISP I had spoken with was eager to keep jihadists off of their servers--I informed Donaldson that PIJ was designated as an FTO and that The Planet was likely in violation of federal law by doing business with them. She remained unmoved.

Later Donaldson emailed me a statement, reading:

As a service provider, we don't police or control the content of Web sites for any of our customers. By U.S. law – and the power of the Constitution – any person or organization is freely able to express their opinions, even if we don't agree with the content.

At The Planet, we absolutely comply with U.S. law and also clearly delineate our Acceptable Use Policy, known in the industry as an AUP. If we discover there is a credible threat or some type of pending harm, we notify and work closely with the appropriate authorities.

That was on July 26. Today, The Planet is still hosting the PIJ website, in apparent non-compliance with U.S. law.

ANTI-SEMITISM AT DAILY KOS

Powerful Political Blog Attracts Israel Hate Posts - Robert Goldberg (Washington Times)
Eyal Rosenberg resigned as a diarist for the powerful political blog DailyKos on May 9 after "all the Israel Hate spewing out of one too many diaries around here." As he wrote in his last post: "Reading these past months on dkos has led me to believe that people here, under the 'progressive' banner, support views that end up in one place: Me dead." Recently, a DailyKos diarist suggested "gassing Joe Lieberman like a dog."

Rosenberg notes that the anti-Semitic attacks are not "isolated." In his brief time as a diarist (several months), he counted 5,000 Israel or Jewish references in the DailyKos. That's about 23 posts on Jews or Israel a day, most negative.

This past spring, one of the site's diarists posted an image that morphs the face of Israel's minister of strategic affairs, Avigdor Lieberman, with that of Adolf Hitler's shown holding a skull painted with a Star of David, under the caption "Zionism was and remains a racist ideology."
There are thousands of posts blaming Israel for all the terror and conflict in the Middle East.

These are just a few of the 80,000 questions in Bar-Ilan University's Responsa Project (Global Jewish Database), one of the largest computerized databases of Judaic literature. After about 15 years, during which the database was available on CD alone, it has now been launched as a paid subscriber Internet Web site, at www.responsa.co.il.
