UA Student Paper Issues 'Apology' for Jew-Hating Cartoon (LGF)

Another disgusting story of blatant antisemitism at a college campus: Editor of ‘Daily Wildcat’ issues apology over cartoon.

A cartoon in the Arizona Daily Wildcat is causing controversy; so much so that the Editor in Chief issued an apology Wednesday.

The cartoon, created by Joseph Topmiller, shows a cafe receipt that totals $78.73. But the customer, a “Mark Goldfarb”, only left a tip of $5.27. The caption says, “Attention all crappy tipping Jews!!! Just because you’re screwing’ the server...does not mean that it’s a mitzvah.”

The issue is so serious, the anti-defamation league out of Phoenix has offered to come to the U of A and conduct sensitivity training with the editorial staff of the Arizona Daily Wildcat.

Michelle Blumenburg is the Executive Director of U of A’s Hillel Foundation, a national Jewish organization. She’s received dozens of complaints from faculty, alumni and students. “Many students found it very offensive,” says Blumenburg. “They found it anti-Semitic. They found it racist.” ...

The Editor in Chief, Allison Hornick, returned our call but refused any kind of interview, saying what she had written on page 4 of Wednesday’s newspaper was explanation enough.

The letter explains the Wildcat staff discussed the cartoon and questions were raised, but they decided to run it anyway. It goes on to say:

“The comic did not intend to maliciously attack or disrespect the Jewish community. We apologize to any readers who were offended.”
