ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACK IN MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA

Anti-Semitic attack in Melbourne (JTA)
An Orthodox Jewish man was attacked in an apparent anti-Semitic incident in Melbourne.

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission issued a statement saying that the man, who was visibly Jewish, was verbally assaulted Monday by three people who called him a “f***ing Jew” before physically assaulting him in East St. Kilda, a popular Jewish neighborhood.

The victim sustained light injuries but was not hospitalized, according to the Anti-Defamation Commission.

Michael Lipshutz, the commission's chairman, said he was “gravely concerned” at the increase in anti-Semitic violence against the Jewish community.

“Violent attacks by opportunistic individuals are becoming all too common in this generally peaceful community,” he said. “We do not want to get to a situation, as in some parts of the world, where Jews fear wearing traditional Jewish items such as a skullcap because it may lead to them becoming targets.”

Monday’s attack comes just two weeks after the U.S. special envoy against anti-Semitism, Dr. Gregg Rickman, visited Australia to monitor the situation.

Between 2006 and 2007, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry logged 638 anti-Semitic incidents in Australia. The number represented twice the previous annual average and was 8 percent higher than the previous record set five years ago.

“These statistics are extremely worrying and highlight the importance of a holistic approach when dealing with anti-Semitism, including education and punitive measures,” said Anti-Defamation Commission executive officer Manny Waks.

Monday’s attack took place in the same area where an Orthodox man was physically assaulted in 2006 and where Jewish teens were attacked with baseball bats last year. Two of the assailants involved in the '06 attack were convicted.

ORTHODOX TEENS ASSAULTED IN AUSTRALIA

Orthodox teens assaulted in Australia (JTA)
Police are investigating an anti-Semitic assault on two Orthodox Jewish teenagers in Melbourne, Australia. The incident took place Monday night in the heart of Balaclava, a heavily populated Jewish neighborhood.

According to police, the teens were set upon by two men who hurled anti-Semitic abuse at them. One of the victims suffered a slight head injury but did not require hospitalization.

“One of the offenders is potentially one of the assailants from an assault earlier this year,” Police Det. Craig Anderson told JTA. In August, an Orthodox Jew was beaten by a baseball bat in the same neighborhood.

Manny Waks, the executive officer of the B’nai B’rith’s Anti-Defamation Commission, said this incident “comes on top of what we witnessed several months ago with serious assault also targeting Jewish students. We have faith in the Victorian Police and the law enforcement agencies, and we hope the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

AUSSIE TV SORRY FOR AIRING HITLER SHOW BY HOLOCAUST DENIER

Aussie TV sorry about Hitler program (JTA)
Australia’s major pay TV company has apologized for broadcasting a documentary about Adolf Hitler written by Holocaust denier David Irving.

Foxtel CEO Kim Williams said this week he was “acutely embarrassed” that his company screened “The War Files” last Saturday on the History Channel. The documentary, which is based on Irving’s book “Hitler’s War,” paints a revisionist picture of Hitler.

Williams was apprised of Irving’s role in the documentary by a former Jewish member of Parliament, Barry Cohen, who served in the Cabinet in the 1980s. In response, Williams said he canceled the rest of the series and ordered an investigation. "There can be no excuse for such an offensive program seeing the light of day,” Williams wrote to Cohen.

In a separate letter to Williams, Michael Danby, the only Jewish member of federal Parliament, said he was “very impressed” by the Foxtel chief’s prompt response to pull the series.

Irving, who lost a libel suit he filed against Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books in 2000, is banned from entering Australia. Last year he served a 10-month prison sentence in Austria for associating with neo-Nazis.

ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACK ON AUSTRALIAN YESHIVA STUDENT

Yeshiva student attacked in Australia (JTA)
A yeshiva student was the victim of an apparent anti-Semitic attack in Australia. Alon Tam, 17, was walking home from a kosher restaurant in a Melbourne suburb heavily populated by Jews on Saturday night when two men armed with baseball bats confronted him. He told the Australian Associated Press the men yelled "Jew, you deserve to die," as they beat him.

Tam sustained injuries to his torso, arms and shoulder, and is expected to have X-rays to determine the extent of the damage, according to the Australian Jewish News.

“This is Melbourne, you don’t expect things like this to happen,” he told the newspaper. “I’ve been called a f***ing Jew, a bloody Jew on public transport, but I didn’t report it [before]."

In a joint statement, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation Commission condemned the attack.

"We are outraged at this violent anti-Semitic attack which was perpetrated in the heart of the Jewish community," the statement said. "Members of the Jewish community should not be subjected to these sorts of attacks under any circumstances."

The incident began at Glicks, a popular bagel bar, about 45 minutes before Tam was attacked, according to Ephraim Manshari, 17, a Yeshivah College student who was working at the restaurant.

He told AAP he saw the attackers throw a chair through the window and punch a customer. Manshari said the men returned later with baseball bats and attacked Tam as he was heading home

Last year, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry logged more than 440 anti-Semitic incidents in Australia.

IT'S THE ISLAMOFASCISM, STUPID (CONT.)

HERE'S A FOLLOW UP TO AN EARLIER POST, IT'S THE ISLAMOFASCISM, STUPID.

Tanveer Ahmed: Islam must face its uncomfortable truths (Australian)
The latest attack in Britain shows how the Islamist threat is being driven by something much grander than mere foreign policy or feelings of grievance. The perpetrators believe they are soldiers in the perceived historical battle between good and evil.

The methods of attack are becoming more brazen, amateurish and desperate, illustrated most profoundly by the burning terrorist at Glasgow airport shouting "Allah" while struggling with a policeman, but the ideological roots are unchanged.

As a commentator on Muslim affairs and home-grown terrorism, I am often asked whether there is something in Islam itself that is contributing to terrorist acts. As someone who is not a theological expert, I shy away from strong pronouncements on the issue, preferring to discuss the sociological roots of alienation and the modern symbol of protest that Islam has become.

But the question is impossible to avoid and I believe that theology is central and not peripheral to the problem. It is grounded in history, but the sparks have been generated by the information age.

While the images of poverty and war in countries such as Sudan, Palestine or Iraq combined with the relative disadvantage of some Muslim communities in countries such as France or Britain may contribute to radicalisation, the foundation for their acts lies very much in the set of ideas called Islam. I have lost count of the number of occasions disgruntled Muslims have responded to my writings with comments like "Islam is peace" or "You are not a Muslim any more".

Truth be told, I was never a practising Muslim, despite growing up in a Bangladeshi community where religiosity was the norm.

This had more to do with being raised in a secular household and society than any great misgivings about Islam. In fact, I often watched friends who were able to practise a spiritual version of the religion with envy, wishing that I could subscribe to a greater purpose than myself.
But with hindsight, I can see that what we now call extremism was virtually the norm in the community I grew up in. It was completely normal to view Jews as evil and responsible for the ills of the world. It was normal to see the liberal society around us as morally corrupt, its stains to be avoided at all costs. It was normal to see white girls as cheap and easy and to see the ideal of femininity as its antithesis. These views have been pushed to more private, personal spheres amid the present scrutiny of Muslim communities.

But they remain widespread, as research in Britain showed earlier this year: up to 50 per cent of British Muslims aged between 15 and 29 want to see sharia law taken up in Britain. This needs to be seen in the light of American data collated by the Pew Research Centre that showed close to 80 per cent of American Muslims believed they could move up the social ladder in the US and had no interest in Islamic laws on a public level. Like most things Australian, it is likely we sit somewhere between our British and American cousins.

But the threat is very real. It was reported yesterday that up to 3000 young Muslims are at risk of becoming radicalised in Sydney alone, according to research by a member of the now-disbanded Muslim Community Reference Group, Mustapha Kara-Ali. But when these views morph into the violent political act that is terrorism, it is very much based in theology.

At its core, Islam is deeply sceptical of the idea of a secular state. There is no rendering unto Caesar because state and religion are believed to be inseparable. This idea then interacts with centuries-old edicts of Islamic jurists about how the land of Islam should interact with the world of unbelievers, known as dar ul-kufr. The modern radicals then take it further, declaring that since, with the exception perhaps of Pakistan and Iran, there are no Islamic states, the whole world is effectively the land of the unbelievers. As a result, some radicals believe waging war on the whole world is justified to re-create it as an Islamic state.

They go as far as reclassifying the globe as dar ul-harb, "land of war", apparently allowing Muslims to destroy the sanctity of the five rights that every human is granted under Islam: life, wealth, land, mind and belief. In dar ul-harb, anything goes, including the killing of civilians.

While it may appear absurd to most, this nihilistic but exclusivist world view is clearly attracting significant numbers of young Muslims. British police have suggested the latest attacks and foiled plots may have involved teenagers. But the obvious absurdity of the set of ideas is still grounded in Islam, which, regardless of how theological experts argue, can be interpreted in many ways.

Muslim communities must openly argue precisely what it is they fear and loathe about the West. Much of it centres on sexuality. This is the first step in rooting out any Muslim ambivalence about living in the West. But thereafter, the argument must proceed rapidly to Islamic theology and all its uncomfortable truths - from its repeated glowing references to violence, its obsession with and revulsion at sex and its historical antipathy to the very possibility that reason can exist as separate from God.

AUSTRALIAN MUSLIMS UNITE AGAINST ISRAEL

Australian Muslims unite against Israel (Stuff)
Australia's Sunni and Shia Muslims have formed a united front against Israel and declared their support for the Iranian-backed terrorist network Hezbollah.

The unity among the two Muslim sects, which have been at war with each other for centuries, comes as the nation's Jewish community accused top Shia spiritual leader Kamal Mousselmani of creating hatred towards Jews by calling Israel a "terrorist" state and expressing his allegiance to Hezbollah militants, The Australian reported today.

The federal government yesterday also accused Sheik Mousselmani of sending the wrong message to his followers through his adverse views on Israel.

Sunni Muslim leader and community spokesman Keysar Trad yesterday said his sect largely championed Sheik Mousselmani's support for Hezbollah (Party of God), which was revealed by The Weekend Australian.

"Sunnis outside of Lebanon, yes, they still have a great deal of respect for Hezbollah," he said.

But Mr Trad, who does not believe the Lebanese-based Hezbollah is a terrorist group, said Sunni Muslims in Lebanon were less inclined to back the terrorist organisation because of political differences with the Shi'ites.

"I don't believe that Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation," he said. "I agree with (Mousselmani) that the state of Israel has ... consistently engaged in acts of terror which have brought a great deal of pain to the poor Palestinian population and the Lebanese population." The new mufti of Australia, Sunni spiritual leader Fehmi Naji el-Imam, last year called Hezbollah militants "freedom fighters" during an anti-war rally in Melbourne. Sheik Fehmi's spokesman said yesterday the cleric could not be reached.

Hezbollah's military arm, the External Security Organisation, is a proscribed terrorist organisation in Australia, and supporting Hezbollah's political and military wings is illegal under UN counter-terrorist financing declarations.

AUSTRALIA FREES TERRORIST WHO TRIED TO BLOW UP ISRAELI EMBASSY

Australia frees embassy plotter (BBC)
A British-born Muslim who plotted to blow up Israel’s embassy in Australia has been released from jail. Jack Roche, 53, was freed on parole from a top-security prison in Perth, Western Australia, after serving half of his nine-year sentence. Under his parole conditions he must report regularly to police. Roche was jailed in 2004 after he admitted having links to al-Qaeda and planning the Israeli embassy bombing, which was never carried out.
