Finnish vets group selling swastika rings (JTA)
A Finnish veterans' group is selling silver rings engraved with a swastika as a fund-raiser.
The Finnish Veterans' Association said the $86 ring is being sold to raise money for 80,000 World War II veterans. It said the swastika is not intended to have any relation to the Nazi emblem.
The swastika is a symbol in Finnish culture predating World War II and was used to represent the Finnish air force between 1918 and 1945.
Finns to date have purchased 16,000 rings, according to a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel. The rings are available through Dec. 31 at R-Kioski supermarkets in Finland and online.
The ring sale recalls the 1940 "Air Defense" ring, part of a wartime campaign to raise funds for the air force that was battling the Soviet Union. The Finns traded in gold wedding bands and other valuables for a ring made of iron.

Here We Go Again......."would have Culture -and Sports Minister (yes, Finland has a government minister for sports) Stefan Wallin refused to award Matti Rossi with the prize had he known that Rossi had informed on the Hungarian writer, Dénes Kiss to the communist government."
"Mitä muuta Zyskowiczin älämölö oli kuin ilmianto, jonka tarkoitus oli järjestää Suomen parhaalle Shakespearen kääntäjälle valtionkirous 32 vuoden hiljaisen hiillostuksen seuraksi. Kun punaisen fasismin kaatumisesta on kohta kaksi vuosikymmentä, sille jo uskaltaa näyttää hampaitaan. Rohkea teko."
"Zyskowicz's fussing was for no other reason than to squeal, with the sole purpose to orchestrate a state curse for Finland's best Shakespearian translator who has been quietly raked over the coals for 32 years. Red fascism's demise is almost two decades old, now he dares to show his teeth. Really brave."
Kirjailija William Shakespeare kuvaa dramaattisesti vastaavaa yritystä Venetsiassa 1500-luvun lopulla. / The writer William Shakespeare dramatically pictured a comparable attempt in Venice in the late 1500's. "
In the short op-ed, Matti Rossi was clearly making fun of Ben Zyskowicz, and characterizing him in a way that mirrored the story of the merchant of Venice, a Shakespearean play. It was totally irresponsible for the paper to print it, and as I said before about other examples of anti-Semitism in the Finnish media, it's becoming kind of trend here. *L* KGS
More examples of anti-Semitism in the Finnish media, here, here and here.

Finland's Tarnished Holocaust Record - Interview with Serah Beizer
A few years ago it became public that Finland had handed over almost three thousand Soviet prisoners of war to the Germans during World War II. Until that time Finland had the reputation of a country that protected all its Jews, except for eight Central European Jewish refugees who were handed over to the Gestapo. At least seventy Soviet Jewish prisoners were extradited to the Gestapo.
The Finnish government has appointed a historical commission to investigate the deaths, extraditions, and deportations of Soviet prisoners of war and others to the Germans. Author Elina Sana, who has played a crucial role in bringing the matter to public attention, says in her book that Finland should establish a truth commission. There was little punishment for war criminals in Finland. It now seems that a large part of Finland's tarnished wartime record will never be revealed. (Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs)
