Prague City Hall said Thursday it had banned a march planned for next month by a right-wing extremist group through the Czech capital's Jewish quarter. The planned march, which was condemned by Jewish leaders in Prague, was banned because it would lead to "inciting hatred and intolerance of citizens because of their nationality, origin and religious faith," City Hall said in a statement.

The march was scheduled to take place on Nov. 10, a day after the anniversary of Kristallnacht - the 1938 night of terror when the Nazis attacked synagogues and Jewish homes and businesses throughout Germany and parts of Austria. The march was organized by the Young National Democrats, which is linked to the National Resistance, a neo-Nazi group. Organizers said it was meant to protest the deployment of Czech troops in Iraq.

A protest against the Iraq war in Prague's Jewish Quarter is really a neo-Nazi march, a Czech group says.

The planned march by the Young National Democrats is really a front for the extreme right National Resistance, which got municipal approval for a demonstration on Nov. 10, the 69th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Tolerance and Civil Society group has told the Czech press.

The group said the march is being led by one of the country's most active neo-Nazis.

The march organizers told city hall they expected some 150 participants. Counter-demonstrators in Prague for such events typically far outnumber nationals and extremists.

CZECH JEWISH CEMETARY DESECRATED

Vandals knocked over 23 tombstones in a Jewish cemetery in the Czech Republic. Five of the tombstones were broken, the police reported last Friday. The 19th-century cemetery in Pisek, a town 62 miles south of Prague, was renovated and opened to the public in 1993. Pisek today has no Jewish community.

A Jewish cemetery was desecrated in a Czech town. Twenty-five tombstones were toppled over the weekend in Bohumin, about 220 miles east of Prague, Jirina Garajova told The Associated Press. Garajova heads a Jewish community in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic. The 19th century cemetery is no longer used for burials. About 400 Jews lived in Bohumin before World War II, but only 11 are known to have survived the Holocaust.

Vandals sprayed Nazi and racist symbols throughout the Czech city of Brno on Hilter's birthday. Swastikas, SS guard symbols, a tribute to Hitler's birthday and the German phrase "Juden raus," or "Jews out," were found April 23 on some roads, garages, storefront windows, railways and a memorial to victims of World War II, according to Czech Television.
