NEW YORK'S NEXT GOVERNOR?

London tab reportedly has video of FIA president in sex tape (ESPN)
LONDON -- Formula One's governing body is keeping its distance from sexual allegations in a British tabloid newspaper about its president, Max Mosley. "This is a matter between Mr. Mosley and the paper in question," an International Automobile Federation (FIA) spokesman said.  "We understand that Mr. Mosley's lawyers are now in contact with that newspaper and the FIA has no comment."

The News of the World reported in a front page story that FIA president Mosley, 67, had taken part in a "sadomasochistic orgy" with five prostitutes that reportedly involved Nazi role-playing.

According to a story posted by the London-based Times Online on Monday, Mosley and others "re-enacted a concentration camp scene in which he played the role of both guard and inmate."

WELCOME TO SWASTIKA CANADA!

CJC says Swastika's name is OK (JTA)
The Canadian Jewish Congress is comfortable with an explanation of the origins of the name of the Ontario community of Swastika.

The community will celebrate its centennial this summer. The planned festivities prompted the CJC to request information on the community's name.

Swastika's name is not affiliated with the Nazi symbol, community historian Carolyn O'Neil told the Ontario's Northern Daily News on Tuesday.

O'Neil said the community's name may have derived from the language of Northern Ontario's Cree Indians, in which "swas" means joining and "ika" means water.

"It was never the CJC's intention to wipe Swastika off the map," CJC spokeswoman Wendy Lampert told the News.

WHEN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WELCOMED JEWISH REFUGEES FROM NAZI GERMANY

Strange Migration: An Unlikely Haven For Refugees By JORDANA HORN (WSJ)
On July 6, 1938, at Evian-les-Bains, a lovely French tourist resort on Lake Geneva, representatives of 32 countries met for a conference to discuss the growing Jewish refugee problem in Europe triggered by the rise of Nazi Germany. One by one, the representatives from each country (including the U.S.) explained why they would not be able to take in the displaced Jews. The German newspaper Völkischer Beobachter encapsulated what Evian meant for the Jews: "Nobody wants them." The conference was later deemed by various historians to have given Hitler the implicit go-ahead for his Final Solution.

Out of all the conference attendees, only one unlikely nation volunteered to take in refugees. The Dominican Republic, led by dictator Rafael Trujillo, made an offer to receive as many as 100,000 people. Because of problems with exit and transit visas, only about 700 Jews actually made it to that country's shores, to the town of Sosúa on the country's northern coast.

The story of this strange migration is being told at New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage. "Sosúa: A Refuge for Jews in the Dominican Republic" (which opens Sunday and runs through July 25) presents the fascinating and little-known tale of the Jews saved from the Holocaust by a genocidal Caribbean dictator.

SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR FRENCH NAZI APOLOGIST

Suspended sentence for Nazi apologist (The Australian)
FRENCH far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen was handed a three-month suspended jail sentence for describing the Nazi occupation of France as “not especially inhumane”.

Le Pen, 79, was found guilty of denying a crime against humanity and complicity in condoning war crimes, over the remarks made in an interview with a far-right magazine in 2005. The veteran National Front (FN) chief was also fined $A14,500 for his remarks. Le Pen was not in court to hear the verdict but his lawyer said there was a “100 per cent chance” his client would appeal.

Le Pen told Rivarol magazine that “in France at least the German occupation was not especially inhumane, even if there were a number of excesses - inevitable in a country of 550,000 square kilometres.”

“If the Germans had carried out mass executions across the country as the received wisdom would have it, then there wouldn’t have been any need for concentration camps for political deportees.”

He also partially exonerated the German army over a 1944 massacre of 86 people in the town of Villeneve d’Ascq, saying it was the work of a lieutenant “mad with rage” over the death of comrades in a resistance attack, and that it was the Gestapo who intervened to stop the killings.

This version was disputed in court by the mayor of Villeneuve d’Ascq and by prosecutor Anne de Fontette, who said it was like calling the Gestapo “the blue berets of the 1940s”.

Le Pen said at the time he felt absolutely no guilt and claimed he was a victim of persecution, after his remarks were unanimously condemned by French politicians and campaign groups. ...

Le Pen, who founded the FN in 1972, has been convicted of racism or anti-Semitism on previous occasions. In 1987 he described the Nazi gas chambers as a “detail of history”.

THE NAZI ROOTS OF ISLAMO-FASCISM

Seeds of Hate - "Jihad and Jew-Hatred: Islamism, Nazism and the Roots of 9/11" by Matthias Kuntzel - Jeffrey Goldberg (New York Times)

  • One day in Damascus not long ago, I visited the gift shop of the Sheraton Hotel, looking for something to read. There was a paperback copy of The International Jew, published in 2000 in Beirut, a collection of columns exposing the putative role of Jews in such fields as international finance, world governance and bootlegging, based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
  • Next to it was a copy of The Bible Came From Arabia, a piece of twaddle that suggests the Jews are not Jews and Israel isn't Israel. And then there was a pamphlet called "Secrets of the Talmud." Not knowing these secrets, I started reading. The Talmud apparently teaches Jews how best to demolish the world economy and gives Jews the right to take non-Jewish women as slaves and rape them. Anti-Semitic conspiracy literature not only posits crude and senseless ideas, but also tends to be riddled with typos, repetitions and gross errors of grammar, and for this and other reasons I occasionally have trouble taking it seriously.
  • The German scholar Matthias Kuntzel tells us this is a mistake. He takes anti-Semitism, and its most potent current strain, Muslim anti-Semitism, very seriously. His bracing, even startling, book reminds us that it is perilous to ignore idiotic ideas if these idiotic ideas are broadly, and fervently, believed. And across the Muslim world, the very worst ideas about Jews - intricate, outlandish conspiracy theories about their malevolent and absolute power over world affairs - have become scandalously ubiquitous.
  • The question is not only why, of course, but how: how did these ideas, especially those that portray Jews as all-powerful, work their way into modern-day Islamist discourse? The notion of the Jew as malevolently omnipotent is not a traditional Muslim notion. In subsequent centuries Jews lived among Muslims, and it is true that their experience was generally healthier than that of their brethren in Christendom, but only so long as they knew their place; they were ruled and taxed as second-class citizens and were often debased by statute. In the Jim Crow Middle East, no one believed the Jews were in control.
  • Obviously, then, these modern-day ideas about Jewish power were imported from Europe, and Kuntzel makes a bold argument: the dissemination of European models of anti-Semitism among Muslims was an actual project of the Nazi Party, meant to turn Muslims against Jews and Zionism. He says that in the years before World War II, two Muslim leaders in particular willingly and knowingly carried Nazi ideology directly to the Muslim masses. They were Haj Amin al-Husseini, the mufti of Jerusalem, and the Egyptian proto-Islamist Hassan al-Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood.
  • The former Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi once told me that "the question is not what the Germans did to the Jews, but what the Jews did to the Germans." The Jews, he said, deserved their punishment. Kuntzel argues that we should see men like Rantisi for what they are: heirs to the mufti, and heirs to the Nazis.

NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL ENDS NAZI ROLE PLAYING

N.C. school halts Nazi role-play (JTA)
A North Carolina middle school will halt a classroom exercise in which students role-play as Nazis and Jews.

The Hoke County Board of Education voted Tuesday to end the eighth-grade English class exercise in conjunction with reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" after a parent complained, the Fayetteville Observer reported.

Students were divided into Jews and Nazis; the students playing Jews were not allowed to participate in class activities without permission from the students playing Nazis. The roles reversed the following week.

The classroom teacher, Hoke Middle School principal and the schools superintendent all stood behind the project. But the school board decided to end it during a closed session of its regular meeting.

GERMAN DOG NAMED ADOLF GIVES NAZI SALUTE

Dog's Nazi salute lands owner in jail (JTA)
A former car salesman in Germany will spend five months in jail for teaching his dog the Nazi salute.

Roland T trained his dog, named Adolf, to raise a paw in a mimic of the Nazi salute whenever he heard the phrase "Heil Hitler," according to the British tabloid The Sun.

The dog's owner bragged about his dog's trick to police, even though performing a Nazi salute in Germany is illegal.

Adolf is living at an animal shelter while his owner is in jail in Berlin. The shelter staff is working to teach the dog how to shake instead of salute, according to The Sun.

Roland T told The Sun that he was planning to have his pet, who was born on the same day as Hilter, euthanized on the anniversary of the Fuehrer's suicide.

RON PAUL KEEPS NEO-NAZI DONATIONS

Paul keeps white supremacist donation (AP)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has received a $500 campaign donation from a white supremacist, and the Texas congressman doesn’t plan to return it, an aide said Wednesday.

Don Black, of West Palm Beach, recently made the donation, according to campaign filings. He runs a Web site called Stormfront with the motto, “White Pride World Wide.” The site welcomes postings to the “Stormfront White Nationalist Community.”

“Dr. Paul stands for freedom, peace, prosperity and inalienable rights. If someone with small ideologies happens to contribute money to Ron, thinking he can influence Ron in any way, he’s wasted his money,” Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said. “Ron is going to take the money and try to spread the message of freedom.” ...

Black said he supports Paul’s stance on ending the war in Iraq, securing U.S. borders and his opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants. "We know that he’s not a white nationalist. He says he isn’t and we believe him, but on the issues, there’s only one choice,“ Black said Wednesday.

”We like his stand on tight borders and opposition to a police state,“ Black told The Palm Beach Post earlier. On his Web site, Black says he has been involved in ”the White patriot movement for 30 years.“

FINNISH VETS SELLING SWASTIKA RINGS

Finnish vets group selling swastika rings (JTA)
A Finnish veterans' group is selling silver rings engraved with a swastika as a fund-raiser.

The Finnish Veterans' Association said the $86 ring is being sold to raise money for 80,000 World War II veterans. It said the swastika is not intended to have any relation to the Nazi emblem.

The swastika is a symbol in Finnish culture predating World War II and was used to represent the Finnish air force between 1918 and 1945.

Finns to date have purchased 16,000 rings, according to a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel. The rings are available through Dec. 31 at R-Kioski supermarkets in Finland and online.

The ring sale recalls the 1940 "Air Defense" ring, part of a wartime campaign to raise funds for the air force that was battling the Soviet Union. The Finns traded in gold wedding bands and other valuables for a ring made of iron.

UNREPENTANT NAZI DRAWS PENSIONS FROM 3 COUNTRIES

Unrepentant Nazi, 84, calls Auschwitz a 'ten star hotel' and tells Dachau victim 'you survived well' (UK Daily Mail)
An unrepentant old Nazi officer who served in some of the worst concentration camps gives the Hitler salute in Spain where he has hidden from justice for over 60 years. Now Paul Maria Hafner is the subject of a TV documentary called "Hafner's Paradise" which chronicles his life in exile – and how he manages to draw pensions from three countries.

Operation Last Chance, the campaign to round up the last Nazis in Europe organised by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Israel, has him on their wanted list. Yet although Hafner, 84, continues to make outrageous statements that would put him behind bars in Germany or Austria, no government has sought to prosecute him.

He calls the death camp of Auschwitz, where 1.1 million Jews were murdered, "a ten star hotel" where "Jews were sent for their own protection. All that stuff about murder is Allied propaganda crap." Of Hitler he says: "I regard him as the greatest man who ever lived, the most important person in the history of the world." He said he gets out of bed every day to give the raised arm salute to his Fuehrer.

He agreed to a documentary being made on him "because I want to set the record straight about our ideals and our cause during the Third Reich." He admits he dreams of seeing a "Fourth Reich" in Germany adding: "I am only sorry I will not be around to see it."

After WWII, Hafner found asylum in Franco's Spain, protected from allegations of war crimes and surrounded by old comrades. This is why Spain is "paradise on earth" for him - a place that allows him to continue to nurture his fanaticism, and yet protects him from the scrutiny of international justice.

"No Jew was ever killed under Hitler for being a Jew," he said, refusing to elaborate on what he did when posted to the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau in Germany.

Hafner is not being pursued actively by governments although Nazi war crime sleuths in Israel believe him guilty of atrocities in the two concentrations camps where he worked and on the Eastern Front where he served as a fighting SS man.

He draws three pensions because he qualifies for a war pension from Germany, an old age pension in Spain where he worked for many years as a pig farmer and one from Italy because it is the land of his birth.

Being a former concentration camp guard is not a barrier to receiving a German pension.

In the documentary, Hafner is brought face-to-face with a survivor from Dachau. You survived quite well," Hafner responds matter-of-factly after the Jewish victim recounts his painful memories.

According to Hafner there are hundreds like him in Spain.

Gunter Schwaiger, who filmed Hafner's Paradise, said: "He is in close contact with people who are indeed wanted or have been convicted in other countries because of their anti-Semitic actions and declarations, or because they have denied the existence of the Holocaust.

"Paul María Hafner is neither a Martian nor a diabolical being, but an apparently respectable gentleman living in a smart Madrid neighbourhood who, aged 84, might be taken for a congenial grandfather, filled with goodness and affection.

"The defeat of the Third Reich was an enormous trauma for Hafner, from which he has not yet recovered. His convictions have simply become firmer. He is not troubled by the accounts of the victims, or that National Socialism led the world to disaster. His fanaticism remains just as intact today as 60 years ago."

The film is due for release in the UK in the spring.

NEO-NAZI GIVES $$ TO RON PAUL

Neo-Nazi leader gives Ron Paul $500 (LoneStar Times)
A LoneStarTimes.com investigation has conclusively established that a leading figure in the American neo-Nazi / White-Supremacist movement has provided financial support to Ron Paul’s 2008 Presidential campaign.

The individual in question is Don Black, the founder, owner and operator of Stormfront, a “white power” website that both professional journalists and watch-dog groups have identified as the premier English-language racist/hate-site on the Internet.
Previous LST posts have focused on banner “widgets” appearing on the front-page of Stormfront. It is important to emphasize that these are NOT “advertisements” placed on Stormfront BY the Paul campaign, but rather publicly-available graphics that Stormfront’s owner has chosen to place himself, with links directly to Paul’s donation page.

POLL: 1/4 OF GERMANS SEE GOOD IN NAZI RULE

Poll: Some Germans See Good in Nazi Rule (AP)
BERLIN (AP) - A quarter of Germans believe there were some positive aspects to Nazi rule, according to a poll published Wednesday—a finding that comes after a popular talk show host was fired for praising Nazi Germany's attitude toward motherhood.

Pollsters for the Forsa agency, commissioned by the weekly magazine Stern, asked whether National Socialism also had some "good sides (such as) the construction of the highway system, the elimination of unemployment, the low criminality rate (and) the encouragement of the family."

Forsa said 25 percent responded "yes"—but 70 percent said "no." ....

The poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, showed that people 60 or older had the highest regard for aspects of the era, with 37 percent answering "yes."

Those who grew up directly after the war, now aged 45 to 59, were the least enthusiastic about the Nazi era, with only 15 percent responding "yes."

CALIFORNIA NAVY BARRACKS SHAPED LIKE A SWASTIKA

Costly renovations (The Week)
The U.S. Navy will spend $682,000 to camouflage a [Coronado] California barracks after aerial photos revealed that it’s shaped like a swastika. Navy officials had long known about the shape of the building, completed in 1967, but figured few people would notice, because civilian planes are barred from flying directly over the base. But the building is now visible to anyone with a computer, thanks to Web sites such as Google Earth, which features aerial photographs of large segments of the globe. “You have to realize, back in the ’60s we did not have the Internet,” said Navy spokeswoman Angelic Dolan. The Navy says it will alter the building’s roof and landscaping to disguise its shape.
