THE NYT'S SUBTLE BIAS
Palestinians Are "Killed," But an Israeli Merely "Dies"
Greg Myre's Wednesday story from Jerusalem begins: "An Israeli soldier was killed and four were wounded Tuesday when a Palestinian double agent lured them into a booby-trapped chicken coop in Gaza City, the Hamas movement said. In fighting that followed, Israeli forces killed four Palestinian militants in the deadliest single clash since the Palestinian leader, Yasir Arafat, died nearly four weeks ago."
So how does the Times' headline writer treat the incidents? By choosing words ("dies") that gloss over the fact that Palestinians killed an Israeli soldier, yet taking care to note that Israeli soldiers killed Palestinians: "Israeli Soldier Dies in Gaza; Army Kills 4 Palestinians."
