HOW DO YOU DEFINE "TRUCE" IN AN ARABIC DICTIONARY?

Sharon, Abbas announce end to four years of fighting By HERB KEINON AND JPOST STAFF
"We must all announce here today that violence will not win, that violence will not be allowed to murder hope," Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced, in an emotional speech closing Tuesday's summit at Sharm e-Sheikh. "We hope that today we are starting a new period of tranquility and hope...Only actions and not words – this is the only way to attain the vision of two states living side-by-side in peace and tranquility."

The landmark four-way summit, hosted by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, was also attended by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Jordanian King Abdullah II.
There is a "new wind" blowing, Sharon said, "and we should not let it pass, leaving us empty handed. We must not miss this opportunity to put a stop to four years of violence; this is a delicate opportunity, and we must be careful," the prime minister told a room full of reporters and television cameras.

Sharon declared that during the one-on-one meeting between him and Abbas, "We agreed that all Palestinians will stop all acts of violence against all Israelis everywhere and, in parallel, Israel will cease all its military activity against all Palestinians anywhere."

WHILE SHARON AND ABBAS DECLARED HOSTILITIES AT AN END (FOR NOW), HAMAS HAD OTHER IDEAS.

Hamas says not bound by Palestinian ceasefire.
GAZA CITY (AFP) - Palestinian Islamist militant movement Hamas said that it was not bound by the ceasefire announced by Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas at a Middle East peace summit in Egypt. Abbas’s declaration “expresses only the position of the Palestinian Authority. It does not express the position of the Palestinian movements,” said Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri.

In Beirut, Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdaneh said the ceasefire pledge “does not commit the Palestinian resistance.” ... “(Hamas) is maintaining its position. There will not be a real truce with Israel without real reciprocity,” he said. “We will act on the truce depending on the commitment by the Zionist enemy to meet our conditions, starting with all Palestinian prisoners.”
