U.S. HYPOCRITICALLY SANCTIONS ISRAEL OVER ARMS DEAL

THE U.S. CONTINUES TO SELL ARMS TO ISRAEL'S ENEMIES BUT COMPLAINS WHEN ISRAEL SELLS ARMS TO CHINA.

U.S. sanctions Israel over arms deal
U.S. sanctions against Israel over an arms deal with China will remain in effect until Israel improves monitoring sensitive exports, it was reported Wednesday. The crisis erupted over Israel's sale to China of replacement parts for Harpy attack drones, the Ha'aretz newspaper reported. The drones that were sold in the mid-1990s reportedly can destroy enemy radar transmitters. The deal with China provided for upgrading them, Ha'aretz said.

The U.S. sanctions follow legislation that imposed a 5-year ban on purchasing defense items from any state that sells arms to China. Israel has acquiesced to most of the demands, but the United States then made additional demands, Ha'aretz said.

The report said that Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, who about to go to Washington to discuss the issue, but canceled the trip because of the new U.S. demands. The United States reportedly wants the Knesset to pass a law, within 18 months, tightening control over military exports. It demands also a written apology from Israel and Mofaz, Ha'aretz said.

YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. THE U.S. IS INSTRUCTING THE KNESSET TO PASS A LAW DICTATED BY THE U.S. ARE WE SURE CHUTZPAH IS A YIDDISH WORD?

Saudi prince: Zionism to blame for terror attack By Lisa Myers and the NBC Investigative Unit

Last month, an attack on contractors at the Saudi oil facility in Yanbu killed six Westerners, two of them Americans. Senior Saudi officials told the world al-Qaida terrorists were to blame and al-Qaida claimed responsibility.

But tape obtained by NBC News reveals that, inside Saudi Arabia, on Saudi television, Crown Prince Abdullah told a strikingly different story about who was to blame. NBC News translated Abdullah's remarks from Arabic: “Zionism is behind it. It has become clear now. It has become clear to us. I don’t say, I mean... It is not 100 percent, but 95 percent that the Zionist hands are behind what happened.” Watch the video

J'ACCUSE L'WASPS

J’Accuse Episcopalians, Presbyterians, et al. By Martin Peretz (The New Republic)
The Episcopal Church in the United States has long been threatening to disinvest from U.S. companies that “support the occupation of Palestinian lands” — such as Caterpillar, whose tractors are used by settlers in the West Bank. (To be sure, it would disinvest from companies that promote violence against innocent Israelis. But which U.S. corporation makes suicide bombs?) The Episcopalians are not the first of the Protestant churches to go down the disinvestment route against Israel. The Presbyterians have that distinction. But, just last week, in England, the Anglican Consultative Council, including the present Archbishop of Canterbury, voted unanimously to do the same. (The previous archbishop criticized the move.) The Anglicans have an analysis backing up their position: “It is the Israeli occupation in its many facets that foments the violence and fuels the conflict.” This ignores so many facts that it boggles the mind. Neither the Arabs of Palestine nor the established Arab states were willing to accept an Israel within very crimped borders; the occupation began in 1967 after the Arabs provoked—but lost — a war to eradicate precisely such a precarious Israel; and the Palestinians rejected out of hand the near-total withdrawals that Israel offered at Camp David in 2000 and Taba in 2001. These peace-mongering Anglican bishops are playing the role of “useful idiots,” this time for Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the other irredentist and murderous factions of the Palestinian polity that will be remembered for adventures like sending, last week, a troubled young woman to blow herself up at a hospital in Beersheba where she had been treated conscientiously and competently for her maladies.

The Anglican luminaries are either ignorant or mendacious. A church spokesman, James Rosenthal, stated that the resolution expressed the Anglican concern for the situation of Palestinian Christians living in the territories. Now, it is true that Christians are in deep despair in emerging Palestine, but not because they are endangered by Israel. They are tormented and threatened by Muslim extremists inside and outside the Palestinian Authority. Ever since the handshake on the White House lawn, (September, 1993) Christians have been deserting the territories out of fear that the Israelis will abandon them to the twin mercies of virulent Arab nationalism and Islamic fanaticism.

Until the Oslo agreement, Christians were perhaps 60 percent of the population of Bethlehem. Now they are down to 30 to 35 percent. Bethlehem is not the only town that Christians are forsaking. Some of them have gone to Detroit, others to Australia. The responsibility for the predicament of Palestinian Christians lies squarely with those Palestinian Muslims whom the Anglicans and Presbyterians and everybody else with supposed good in their hearts have long tried to appease. (In carving up the tiny old city of Jerusalem at Camp David, negotiators proposed placing portions of Jerusalem’s Christian neighborhoods under Palestinian sovereignty, and sheer panic ensued among the city’s resident Christians, whose foothold in the sacred terrain is older than everyone’s but the Jews. Relief only came with the news that Yasir Arafat had turned down the Camp David deal.....

What kindles the fire in their hearts for Palestine? There is little or nothing in Palestinian society that would fill a progressive with enthusiasm. And these churches do not generally exult in the promise of yet one more nation-state. In fact, these churches are against the nation-state, especially the U.S. nation-state. (In Nottingham last week, the Anglicans. demanded the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.) And, even if you take to the harshest reading of Israeli behavior in their ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, dozens and dozens of other peoples in the world, some of whom have a much sounder claim to be a real nation than those for whom the official Anglicans and Presbyterians shed so many tears, suffer infinitely more deprivation and indignity than they do. But tears are not shed for those people at Canterbury Cathedral in England or, for that matter, at Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, whose rectors have for years been virtual street agitators against Israel.

So I come to an unavoidable conclusion. The obsession here is not positive, for one side, but rather negative, against the other side. The clerics and the lay leaders on this indefensible crusade are so fixated on Palestine because their obsession, which can be buttressed by various Christian sources and traditions, is really with the Jews. A close look at this morbid passion makes one realize that its roots include an ancient hostility for the House of Israel, an ugly survival of a hoary intolerance into some of the allegedly enlightened precincts of modern Christendom.

BRITAIN'S CHANGING TUNE

AGAIN, IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE BRITISH COULD SEE THAT THIS APPLIES TO ISRAEL AND NOT JUST THEM. I WONDER IF THEIR FOREIGN OFFICE IS CONTINUING TO TALK TO HAMAS, WHICH AFTER ALL IS ONLY KILLING ISRAELIS.

How Do You Fight an Enemy Who Wants to Die? - Janet Daley
How do you fight an enemy who is not only prepared to sacrifice his own life, but who positively wants to die? There is no debate to be had here. We are in the territory of outright madness. Those who pretend that there could be some accommodation with the aims of this movement - who see it as a new power balance in the world that must be addressed in foreign policy terms - are criminally irresponsible. There is nothing short of the extinction of democratic, secular society that would appease this enemy. (Sunday Times-UK)

ONLY ONE NATION HAS "NO CIVILIANS"

Only One Nation Has No Civilians - Jonathan Freedland
Last week, London Mayor Ken Livingstone was asked about his public embrace of Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who has repeatedly praised suicide bombers in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Qaradawi's argument is that there is no such thing as an Israeli civilian. Israeli women can be called to national service; Israeli children will grow up to be soldiers. Even the unborn Israeli child in the womb is a legitimate target for death, because one day he will wear a uniform. This ceases to be a political stance; this becomes the demonization of a people. Only one nation on the planet has no civilians; only one nation must recognize that its children can legitimately be torn apart by nail bombs on buses. Only the Israelis are less than human, denied the protections afforded to all other human beings. (Guardian-UK)

VATICAN DENOUNCES ISRAELI "RETALIATION"

Vatican Denounces Some Israel Retaliation
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Thursday denounced some Israeli retaliations against past terrorism as a violation of international law in an ongoing spat over Pope Benedict XVI''s failure to specifically condemn terror against Israel in recent remarks.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Vatican envoy to Israel on Monday and complained that Benedict "deliberately" didn't mention a July 12 suicide bombing in Netanya while referring to recent terror strikes in Egypt, Britain, Turkey and Iraq.

"It's not always possible to immediately follow every attack against Israel with a public statement of condemnation," a statement from the Vatican press office said Thursday night, "and (that is) for various reasons, among them the fact that the attacks against Israel sometimes were followed by immediate Israeli reactions not always compatible with the rules of international law."

"It would thus be impossible to condemn the first (the terror strikes) and let the second (Israeli retaliation) pass in silence," said the statement, which had an unusually blistering tone for the Holy See.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry refused to comment on the Vatican statement.

On Sunday, as Benedict addressed pilgrims while on vacation at his Alpine retreat, he prayed for God to stop the "murderous hand" of terrorists. He denounced as "abhorrent" the terror strikes at a Red Sea resort in Egypt, the mass transit attacks in Britain and other terrorism in Iraq and Turkey.

A TRIPLE FENCE FOR GAZA

THIS SHOULD MAKE THE TERRORIST SYMPATHIZING EUROPEANS THREE TIMES ANGRIER.

Israel plans triple-fencing of Gaza after pullout
URIM, Israel, July 28 (Reuters) - Israel is rushing to complete a three-layer-deep barrier of fences and walls on its border with Gaza to keep out Palestinian infiltrators after it pulls out of the territory, military officials said on Thursday. .... The plan calls for adding two new fences parallel to the border fence that already surrounds the Gaza Strip and putting up seven-metre (23-foot)-high concrete walls in a few places, a senior military official said. He put the cost at $220 million.

Israel is beefing up its border defences, including construction of new army bases, to compensate for losing its military presence in Gaza after it removes all 21 Jewish settlements from the occupied territory starting in mid-August. Security officials worry that even after the withdrawal, Gaza militants will try to infiltrate gunmen and suicide bombers into the Jewish state and fire rockets across the border.

SUSPECT IN DANIEL PEARL KILLING ARRESTED

Suspect in Pearl killing arrested in Pakistan: Hashim Qadeer allegedly set up meeting between U.S. reporter and killer (MSNBC)

LAHORE, Pakistan - Police and intelligence agents Wednesday arrested a suspected militant who was wanted for a role in the killing of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, officials said. The man, identified as Hashim Qadeer, was captured from a bus at a terminal in the eastern Pakistan city of Gujranwala, police and intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Both requested anonymity because they are not authorized to make media statements.

Pearl was kidnapped and later beheaded in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi in 2002 after being abducted while he was researching a story on Islamic militancy. Months later, a court in Karachi convicted four Islamic militants in Pearl’s killing, including British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who was sentenced to death. The three others were given life imprisonment.

The Karachi-based intelligence official said Qadeer is believed to have arranged a meeting between Sheikh and Pearl at a hotel in Rawalpindi, a city near the capital of Islamabad.

Two other militants wanted in Pearl’s case were killed in shootouts with security forces last year. Five others remained at large, and Qadeer was one of them, the police official said. In 2003, authorities listed Qadeer among the country’s 40 most-wanted men.

UPDATED: HOW ARAFAT DESTROYED "PALESTINE"

IN A RUINED COUNTRY: How Yasir Arafat destroyed Palestine by David Samuels (Atlantic Monthly)

During several months in the Middle East, David Samuels spoke with Arafat’s bodyguard, his friends, and his adopted daughter; with his head spymaster and his money-launderer; with high-ranking Palestinian and Israeli officials; and with Western diplomats who had worked closely with him over the years. The result, “In a Ruined Country”, traces how Arafat became both the father and the destroyer of Palestine. It is a complex portrait of an infinitely complex man whom Samuels sees as both the “most accomplished liar in the Middle East” and one of the greatest chess masters of world politics.

The amounts of money stolen from the PA and the Palestinian people through the corrupt practices of Arafat's inner circle are so staggeringly large that they may exceed one half of the total of $7 billion in foreign aid. The biggest thief was Arafat himself. Arafat hid his personal stash, estimated at $1 billion to $3 billion, in more than 200 separate bank accounts around the world. What followed Arafat's return [to the territories] was a decade-long thieves' banquet at which Fatah's old guard divided up the spoils of Oslo and treated ordinary Palestinians as conquered subjects. Palestinians were subjected to the extortion and violence of Arafat's overlapping security services, which competed for payoffs, arbitrarily arrested people, and seized their land.

In the cafes and apartments in Ramallah where we met, some of the leading members of Fatah's young guard spoke openly of their anger and disappointment at what had happened in Palestine since Oslo. They reserved their bitterest denunciations not for the Israelis but for Arafat's cronies, who had used state jobs to get rich, and showed little interest in their revolutionary progeny.

Dennis Ross: "The first time I went to complain to [Arafat] about the bombing - the first set of bombings were, I guess, in April '94, in Hadera and Afula - and I'm with him, and he leans over like this and he whispers, 'You know, it's Barak. He's got this group, the OSS, in the Israeli military, and they're doing this.' And I said to him, 'Don't be ridiculous.' I said, 'You know the Israelis are not killing themselves.' This was classic Arafat, never wanting to be responsible."

Terje Roed-Larsen, the most visible representative of the UN in the Middle East, met weekly with Arafat for more than a decade:Q: "What was it like when he lied to you?"A: "He lied all the time. And he knew it. I'd say, 'Abu Ammar, cut the crap. Let's talk serious.' And then he could either talk serious or not talk serious. He'd say nonsense....'It's not me - it's al-Qaeda.' 'It's the Iranians.'...'It's the Syrians.'...Of course everybody around him knew he was behind it."

Iyad Sarraj, a human-rights activist and director of a mental health organization in Gaza, concluded: "Palestinians have lost the battle because of their lack of organization and because they have been captives of rhetoric and sloganeering rather than actual work....I believe that the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians in one way or the other is between development and underdevelopment, civilization and backwardness. Israel was established on the rule of law, on democratization, and certain principles that would advance Israel, while the Arabs and the Palestinians were waiting always for the prophet, for the rescuer, for the savior."

PA GLORIFIES JERUSALEM COUPLE'S MURDERERS AS MARTYRS

AT LEAST THEY WAITED UNTIL THE DAY AFTER CONDIE RICE LEFT.

PA Glorifies Jerusalem Couple's Murderers as Martyrs - Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook (Palestinian Media Watch)
While the Palestinian Authority is praised for its "fight" against terror, in Arabic the PA continues to glorify terror targeting Israelis. Dov Kol, 58, and Rachel Kol, 53, of Jerusalem were murdered and another five Israelis were wounded on July 23 when Palestinian terrorists opened fire on their vehicles as they were leaving Gush Katif. The PA's official daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida (25 July 05), published a photo of the murderers in uniform and holding weapons, with the caption: "The executors of the attack in Gaza, the Shahids (Martyrs) Yekhya Abu Taha and Tariq Yassin." Under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, the PA's official daily continues to endorse the murder of Jews and grants to the murderers the elevated status of Shahid - Martyr for Allah.

WHERE'S THE OUTRAGE?

Where’s the Outrage?Anti-Semitism cannot be tolerated. But, of course, it is. by Kathryn Lopez (National Review)

The news on July 7, 2005 — when a series of bombings in London killed scores of innocent train and bus commuters during morning rush hour — felt eerily familiar. On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and another Washington, D.C., landmark (believed to have been the U.S. Capitol building or the White House) were the targets of Islamic extremism. Nearly 3,000 died that day. In London on July 7, more than 50 people were killed, with hundreds more injured. But the carnage wasn't the only horror those two tragedies had in common. The lethal stench of anti-Semitism also clung to both nightmares, a type of hatred that is, infuriatingly, not all that unusual.

As the confusing early reports came in from London on July 7, it was quickly reported that Israeli finance minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been given a head's up before the attacks, warned not to go ahead with the speech he was scheduled to deliver because of security concerns. That story was bogus, and that would later be reported, too. But Internet, radio, and TV outlets had already run with the advance warning lie; the bell could not be unrung.

On the morning of 9/11/01, one powerful rumor claimed that Jewish people who worked at the World Trade Center were tipped off not to go to work that morning. Ultimately, the "news" came from the same place as the July 7 "blame-the-Jews" scapegoating reflex seemed to: a historically deep store of anti-Semitism.

Make no mistake, anti-Semitism is an undeniable part of the war Islamic militants are currently waging on innocents the world over.

It's hard to pass a synagogue in a big city, where Jersey barriers and cop cars are commonplace, or hear murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl being forced to "confess" that his "father's Jewish, my mother's Jewish, I'm Jewish" and not realize how ferociously this hatred is fueled. As Gabriel Schoenfeld writes in The Return of Anti-Semitism: "the United States is now locked in a conflict with adversaries for whom hatred of Jews lies at the ideological core of their beliefs."

While the use of the term anti-Semitism may seem amorphous, like a media buzzword of the week, it has history and is, to some extent, quantifiable. According to the FBI, there were 931 anti-Jewish hate crimes in the United States in 2002 (compared with 155 anti-Muslim attacks). Across the pond, a 2003 report noted that "opinion polls prove that in some European countries a large percentage of the population harbors anti-Semitic attitudes and views."

But this heinous sentiment goes beyond the war, domestic acts of violence, and ignorant personal prejudices. Anti-Semitism can get into the public bloodstream and influence the key debates of the day. That Jewish "neo-con" hawks in the Bush administration drove us to war in Iraq is commonplace in American foreign-policy debates, for example, their supposed dual loyalties to Israel unduly influencing the president.

Anti-Semitism, in fact, often seems the rule rather than the exception in international relations. It was only days before the 2001 attacks when the United Nations held a shameful conference in Durban, South Africa. Ironically named the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance, it let anti-Semitism all hang out. The conference itself condemned the Middle East's only democracy, calling Israel a "racist, apartheid state" — not surprising in an atmosphere where Jewish nationalism itself has long been considered a form of racism.

However enlightened we may believe we are, ignorance and hate flourishes in our day. As Phyllis Chesler, author of The New Anti-Semitism, has argued, "Many people still believe that the Jews run the media, control the banks, killed Christ, seek world domination, and have ears everywhere." And today, add to that a global reach — where "Jew hatred is being mass-produced." When that hate finds its way into the mainstream consciousness, it might as well be true.

In 2002, for instance, it was widely reported that Israel had perpetrated a massacre in a Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. The British Guardian editorialized that Israel's actions in Jenin were "every bit as repellent" as the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. The Jenin atrocity, however, never happened, even according to a U.N. investigation. But people believe that it did to this day—again, the damage had already been done.

Instead of being unacceptable — as it should be — all too often anti-Semitism is tolerated by civilized people who should be repulsed and outraged by it. That it is a centuries-old bias often makes it somewhat "dog bites man" — which is all the more reason to condemn it clearly and loudly and often. And it doesn't help the cause of good versus evil when the prime minister of Britain speaks on the floor of the House of Commons after the London bombing, and, in listing nations that have also fallen victim to Islamic terrorism, leaves out Israel (where bus bombings have long been a reality, not a fear).

You don't have to be anti-Semitic to be part of the problem. Consciously or not, what is not said by a prime minister and what is erroneously reported by a wire service are all symptoms of a malignant societal tumor.

THE ONE GREAT PALESTINIAN INVENTION

What the World Owes the Palestinians and the Left By Dennis Prager (FrontPageMagazine.com)

In the last few weeks, innocent men, women and children have been blown up, paralyzed, brain damaged and otherwise had their lives ruined by Muslim suicide bombers in Britain, Egypt, and Iraq. Who can we thank for this man-made plague? Palestinians and the Left. We need to thank Palestinians for their major contribution to humanity: religiously sanctioned mass murder of innocents through suicide. Prior to the Palestinians, this did not exist.

It is true that Tamil suicide bombers in Sri Lanka have murdered many thousands and they are not Muslims. But the Tamil rationale for suicide terror -- though utterly immoral -- is confined to a (secular) nationalist movement in Sri Lanka. Palestinian Muslims -- no Palestinian Christians have committed a suicide bombing -- have created a religious and moral basis for mass murder and did so within a worldwide religion with a billion adherents. When the Palestinians sent brainwashed young men to blow themselves up in Israeli buses, cafes, and discos, they offered justifications that provided the basis for many others to do the same.

They said that blowing up Jews in Israel -- of any age and in any location -- was an act that glorified Allah, that one who engaged in such atrocities was a Muslim equivalent to a saint, and would be rewarded in heaven by many beautiful virgins. I do not know of any Muslim religious organization or leader who condemned this Palestinian Muslim terror-theology as anti-Islamic.
....

What therefore happened was that the religious justification for murdering innocent people took hold in the Muslim world. It apparently never occurred to Muslim leaders that once you justify evil, that evil will eventually be unleashed against you, too. If blowing up Jewish children is OK, so is blowing up Egyptian, Moroccan, Iraqi, British, Spanish, and Russian children.

And that is where the Left comes in. They have provided the secular and universal justification for Palestinian Islamic terror against Jews. According to the world's Left, it's OK for Palestinians to put bombs in an Israeli student cafeteria because:

1. Israel occupies Palestinian land (even though a leftist Israeli government offered 97 percent of it to Yasser Arafat);
2. Therefore, Palestinians are engaging in legitimate resistance.
3. Since Palestinians don't have sophisticated weaponry, they use their weapon: the suicide bomber.
4. Israelis kill Palestinian civilians, so there is a moral equivalence between Israel and the Palestinians (even though the Palestinians target Jewish innocents and the Israelis do not target Palestinian innocents).

But, alas, the anti-Israel Left (an almost redundant description), too, did not understand the genie it had helped unleash onto the world. Why is it all right for Muslims to blow up Israeli children, but not Russian children? Israeli buses, but not British buses? Jews in Israel, but not Muslims in Iraq?

Actually, for many on the Left, it is all right. The socialist mayor of London himself blames the terror in his city on British support for America and Israel, not on Islamic terror-theology. Like London's mayor, the Left around the world blames Israel for the Palestinian suicide bombers, and blames America for those in Iraq. Without the Left around the world, the Palestinian God-based mass murder through suicide would have been an isolated phenomenon, universally condemned as the evil it is.

And who is to blame for the Muslim terror in other Muslim countries such as Morocco and Egypt? Here, the leftist and Muslim apologists for Palestinian terror enter cognitive dissonance. The next time you read of men, women and children blown apart by a young Muslim praising Allah, you can thank Palestinians and the Left.

WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

IT'S NICE TO SEE NEWSWEEK PUBLISH THIS ARTICLE. BUT WHERE WAS SUCH COMMENTARY WHEN THE ISLAMOFASCISTS WERE KILLING ISRAELI CHILDREN INSTEAD OF BRITISH COMMUTERS?

How to Stop the Contagion: This is battle, not an academic seminar. We in the West have to discredit, delegitimize and dismantle barbaric ideas. By Fareed Zakaria (Newsweek)

Suicide bombing cannot be explained by poverty and disadvantage. The London bombers were not the wretched of the earth. They came from working-class but comfortable backgrounds, living in one of the world's most prosperous countries. For all the talk of their being marginalized, none were living in hellish ghettos. Britain today does a decent job of assimilating its immigrants, certainly better than any other European country. If anyone had cause for rage, it was not the bombers but their parents. Muslim migrants from Pakistan (in three cases), they arrived in Britain in less multicultural times. They were dirt-poor and probably ostracized and persecuted. And yet they did not become murderers; they started fish-and-chips shops.

Like all ideologies, radical Islam is a phenomenon of the educated class. From Muhammad Atta to Mohammed Sidique Khan, almost all suicide bombers have been men who read and write. In V. S. Naipaul's book "A Million Mutinies Now," the author interviews a young Hindu fanatic. The man explains his fascistic views, and then Naipaul asks the man's father, who happens to be sitting there, what he thinks. The old man explains that he works at a factory from morning till night and doesn't really have time for these kinds of ideas. Extremist ideology is a leisure-time pursuit.

Nor can foreign policy really explain such rage. The invasion of Iraq clearly has greatly enraged many Muslims, radicalizing some deeply. But can a disagreement over foreign policy really make a Briton like Germaine Lindsay, who had never even visited Iraq, kiss his pregnant wife and child goodbye and go out and blow himself and others up? There is something deeper at work here. Last week Egypt, which sent no troops to Iraq and condemned the invasion, was targeted. Turkey and Indonesia—which are both opponents of the war—have also been attacked. (Besides, the demands keep changing. Osama bin Laden's primary one was that American troops leave Saudi Arabia, which they have done. Bin Laden seems not to have noticed.)

What this is about, as Tony Blair has argued, is fanaticism. Radical ideologies of hate and violence have often seduced disaffected young men searching for some great cause. Forty years ago they would have embraced Leninist revolutionary dogma, with Che Guevara as the bin Laden of his day. Today, for Muslims, it is a violent interpretation of Islamic fundamentalism. Born in the Middle East, it has spread like a virus across the Muslim world and into the Islamic diaspora in the West....

We're fighting a military battle against a phenomenon that is largely nonmilitary. In a battle of ideas, no one bullet will win. We must present a positive vision for Muslim societies, be seen as a friendly and progressive force by them and thus strengthen the moderates and liberals.

But this is battle, not an academic seminar. We also have to discredit, delegitimize and dismantle barbaric ideas. After the London bombings, Arab commentators pointed out that for years Britain has granted asylum to noxious preachers and scholars who praise suicide bombings, argue for the overthrow of Western regimes and celebrate Al Qaeda's victories.

The director-general of Al Arabiya TV, Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed, asked two weeks ago in the London-based daily Asharq Al-Awsat, "Why would Britain grant asylum to Arabs who have been convicted of political crimes or religious extremism, or even sentenced to death? Not only were they admitted to this country, but they were also provided with accommodation, a monthly salary, and free legal advice... for those who want to prosecute the British government." Recall that bin Laden's original declaration of war against the West was published in only one venue, a London-based newspaper. Next time, let him publish it in Saudi Arabia if he can.

"Extremism, like many other diseases, is an infectious one," Al-Rashed continued. "A small dose of carriers can spread the infection like wildfire, establishing a community full of destructive thoughts and practices." It isn't the only answer, but let's start by making life as difficult as possible for the carriers of this virus.

WHAT DO THE TERRORISTS WANT?

What Do the Terrorists Want? by Daniel Pipes (New York Sun)
In nearly all cases, the jihadi terrorists have a patently self-evident ambition: to establish a world dominated by Muslims, Islam, and Islamic law, the Shari'a. Or, again to cite the Daily Telegraph, their "real project is the extension of the Islamic territory across the globe, and the establishment of a worldwide ‘caliphate' founded on Shari'a law."

Terrorists openly declare this goal. The Islamists who assassinated Anwar el-Sadat in 1981 decorated their holding cages with banners proclaiming the "caliphate or death." A biography of one of the most influential Islamist thinkers of recent times and an influence on Osama bin Laden, Abdullah Azzam declares that his life "revolved around a single goal, namely the establishment of Allah's Rule on earth" and restoring the caliphate.

Bin Laden himself spoke of ensuring that "the pious caliphate will start from Afghanistan." His chief deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, also dreamed of re-establishing the caliphate, for then, he wrote, "history would make a new turn, God willing, in the opposite direction against the empire of the United States and the world's Jewish government." Another Al-Qaeda leader, Fazlur Rehman Khalil, publishes a magazine that has declared "Due to the blessings of jihad, America's countdown has begun. It will declare defeat soon," to be followed by the creation of a caliphate.

Or, as Mohammed Bouyeri wrote in the note he attached to the corpse of Theo van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker he had just assassinated, "Islam will be victorious through the blood of martyrs who spread its light in every dark corner of this earth.".....

Although terrorists state their jihadi motives loudly and clearly, Westerners and Muslims alike too often fail to hear them. Islamic organizations, Canadian author Irshad Manji observes, pretend that "Islam is an innocent bystander in today's terrorism." What the terrorists want is abundantly clear. It requires monumental denial not to acknowledge it, but we Westerners have risen to the challenge.

STEAMED RICE

Rice Scolds Israel Over Abu Mazen - Yoel Marcus
During Condoleezza Rice's visit to Israel, in public she was all smiles. But in private, she showed herself to be one tough cookie, full of demands on Israel. "She ticked us all off...the way she twisted our arm and said we had to make all kinds of concessions and gestures to strengthen Abu Mazen," said an insider.

Israel, she said, must supply the PA with weapons and ammunition. It must be nice to Abu Mazen's buddies and allow them to operate. As if the missiles and the Kassam rockets fired at Israeli towns every day were our doing. As if the chairman of the PA deserves some kind of compensation.

One participant said Rice spoke like a teacher scolding her students. She demanded that Israel exercise restraint in responding to terror and let Abu Mazen fight Hamas, lest all of Gaza fall into its clutches. As if Israel were standing in his way. Abu Mazen's 100 days of grace were over long ago, and there's still no sign of him getting a handle on things. If he is really so weak that he can't curb terror, can't discuss compromise, and can't come up with any painful concessions on his side, then he is not a worthy partner. (Ha'aretz)

We are committed to connectivity between Gaza and the West Bank, and we are committed to openness and freedom of movement for the Palestinian people." (State Department)

ANOTHER PROTESTANT DENOMINATION TO ISRAEL: "SURRENDER, DOROTHY!"

Another Protestant Church Joins Chorus of Israel Critics - Sam Ser (Jerusalem Post)
The Disciples of Christ church is to discuss a resolution at its annual general assembly meeting in Portland, Oregon, Tuesday calling on Israel to dismantle its West Bank security barrier. The resolution "calls upon the Israeli government to cease the project to construct the barrier, tear down the segments that have already been constructed, and pay reparations" to those affected. "In the wake of the terrorist outrages in London and [the recent] suicide bombing at a shopping mall in Israel, this resolution sends the wrong message, at the wrong time, to the wrong people," said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Palestinians Fire Rocket at Israel Town, Again - Shmulik Hadad and Efrat Weiss
A Kassam rocket fired by Palestinians in Gaza struck the southern Israeli town of Sderot again Tuesday, damaging a number of homes and vehicles. On Monday, IDF Southern Command Head Dan Harel said there were an average of ten daily terror attack attempts in Gaza, and that security forces have thwarted eight attempts by terrorists to infiltrate settlements in the area in the past two months. PALESTINIAN "SECURITY" FORCES UNFIT

THEY MAY BE UNFIT TO PREVENT TERROR, BUT THEY'VE CERTAINLY PROVED THEMSELVES TO BE QUITE ADEPT AT PERPETRATING TERROR.

Palestinian Security Forces Found Unfit - Steven Erlanger
The security forces of the Palestinian Authority are divided, weak, overstaffed, badly motivated, and underarmed, and more attention must be paid to building up institutions rather than personalities, says a "Palestinian Security Assessment" prepared by the Strategic Assessments Initiative, a Washington-based group headed by Amjad Atallah, a former member of the PA's Negotiation Department. Despite recent changes by PA Chairman Abbas, centralizing most forces under Interior Minister Nasser Youssef, that formal structure does not reflect the realities of power, the report indicates. The survey was financed by the Dutch and Canadian governments. (New York Times)

FRANCE: ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ANTI-SEMITIC CRIMES

Zero tolerance' for anti-Semitic crimes
French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy vowed "zero tolerance" for anti-Semitic crimes during a visit on Monday to a Jewish school targeted in a weekend acid attack. "When someone threatens a Jew, they threaten the Republic," Sarkozy said at the Sinai school in northern Paris.

Attackers on Saturday threw three bottles of hydrochloric acid at a part of the school that serves as a synagogue. Worshippers were meeting in the room when one of the bottles of acid landed inside. Two others landed in a courtyard. There were no injuries.

Sarkozy insisted there was "only one strategy," that of "zero tolerance, to not allow anything and to punish people right away in order to avoid having to do so when it's already too late." Police on Sunday detained a 15-year-old in connection with the attack, and Sarkozy said two other youths were taken in for questioning on Monday.

Sarkozy's office released a report Monday showing that anti-Semitic acts in France fell by 48 percent to 290 in the first six months of this year, down from 561 in the same period of 2004. The ministry said the number of the most violent acts, like bombings or arson, fell the most to 49 this year from 148 a year ago.

The report came the day before Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was to arrive in France for a four-day visit, his first trip to the country since taking office in 2001. Sharon sparked a diplomatic row last year when he told Jewish American leaders that France was host to "the wildest anti-Semitism" and encouraged French Jews to immigrate to Israel.

GIVING HITLER HELL

Giving Hitler hell
When Nazi decrees destroyed Albert Weiss' family, leaving him abandoned, it would have been hard to imagine this powerless child one day returning to Germany to mete out a rough justice of his own.

Weiss recounts his years in an Orthodox Jewish orphanage near Nuremberg, where the Nazis first wrote their deadly race laws. A murmur of surprise rises from the younger employees when they discover that one of their board members was Weiss's classmate in Germany: Henry Kissinger. But silence descends again, as Weiss recalls running the gantlet through Hitler Youth gangs on his way to school every day, and the foot chases, the beatings in alleys and the scar he bears to this day from being strung up on a lamppost by teenage Nazi wannabes.

Second World War has begun, and everyone in Weiss's orphanage has been sent to the extermination camp in Auschwitz. Young Arnie, however, is safely in the United States, having made it out of Germany in 1938 in one of the so-called Kindertransports that rescued thousands of Jewish children from the gas chamber. He is 13 when he arrives in this country, with only a cardboard suitcase and $5 to his name. He does not speak a word of English or know a single soul.

Now it is 1945, and the 21-year-old Weiss is back in Germany as a U.S. military intelligence officer trained by the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor of the CIA. Hitler's armies are in retreat, and Weiss, a newly minted American, is sent behind enemy lines into Dachau, the German concentration camp, on a daring mission .... the work of his Army intelligence unit begins: tracking down fugitive Nazis.

POPE: "THERE'S TERRORISM IN ISRAEL?"

Do Israelis not bleed?
Israel was outraged by a sermon by Pope Benedict which did not list it among countries that have suffered from Islamic terrorism.

The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem summoned the Vatican ambassador to express outrage at a sermon Sunday in which the pontiff deplored suicide bombings in Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Britain but did not mention a recent Palestinian attack that killed five Israelis in Netanya. “The pope’s omission of this incident cries out to the heavens. Aside from the moral stain implied therein, this cannot but be interpreted as a granting of legitimacy to carrying out terrorist attacks against Jews,” the ministry said in a statement.

Vatican officials declined to comment.

RICKY MARTIN: ALLAH AKBAR!!

Ricky Martin Seeks End to Arab Stereotypes By DALE GAVLAK
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - On his first visit to the Middle East, Ricky Martin declared he will try to change negative perceptions of Arab youth in the West. "I promise I will become a spokesperson, if you allow me to, a spokesperson on your behalf. I will defend you and try to get rid of any stereotypes," the 33-year-old singer told youngsters from 16 mainly Arab countries at a youth conference on Monday. The children, ages 14 to 16, expressed concern about being labeled as "terrorists" by the West.

"I have been a victim of stereotypes. I come from Latin America and to some countries, we are considered 'losers,' drug traffickers, and that is not fair because that is generalizing," said Martin, who was born in Puerto Rico. "Those comments are made out of ignorance and we have to sometimes ignore the ignorant, but we also have to educate the ignorant. You have me here as a friend," he said.

Martin, who is a United Nations Children's Fund goodwill ambassador, said he wanted to get to know the youth and their cultures better.

He said he planned to do a concert tour of the Mideast and North Africa, including Jordan and the Palestinian territories, tentatively scheduled for May 2006.

Martin, whose hits include "She Bangs,""Shake Your Bon-Bon" and "Livin' La Vida Loca," posed for photos with fans, at one point draping over his shoulders a traditional Arab kaffiyeh headscarf with the slogan "Jerusalem Is Ours" written in Arabic on it.

I WONDER IF HE'LL BE UPDATING HIS HIT, "SHE BANGS" WITH NEW LYRICS? MAYBE HE COULD CALL IT, "SHE GOES BANG ON A BUS AND KILLS JEWISH CHILDREN"?

THE SF CHRONICLE'S "SETTLER" FROM WEST JERUSALEM

'Settler' from western Jerusalem (HonestReporting)
The Sunday San Francisco Chronicle had a profile of a Jerusalem resident from the Baka neighborhood whom the Chronicle describes in its headline as a 'settler': "A TIME OF CHANGE: Settler hopes for peace to take root."

Are Chronicle editors so ignorant regarding the region to believe that western/southern Jerusalem contain 'settlements'? Or is all of Israel a controversial 'settlement' in their eyes? The subject of the Chronicle profile, Brian Blum, said:

"I was very disturbed by the initial headline of the article. I was asked to be part of a series on 'normal life' in Israel, but I felt that the headline misrepresented me as a radical!"

At 4 PM Israel time the Chronicle changed the headline to: "A TIME OF CHANGE: Resident hopes for peace to take root." Later, the Chronicle changed the headline to: "A TIME OF CHANGE: Man from Berkeley hopes for peace to take root."

Here's a suggestion -- how about 'Israeli'?!

TERROR IN LONDON AND HYPOCRISY

From London to Jerusalem - Tom Gross
Last Friday, British police shot dead a dark-complexioned man - a Brazilian Catholic - on a train at Stockwell Tube station in south London. Witnesses said the man was already lying on the ground motionless, having tripped, when British police pumped five bullets into his head at close range. Contrary to the absolute lies told in British media in recent days, the Israel Defense Forces have not instituted a shoot-to-kill policy, or trained the British to carry out one. Had Israeli police shot dead an innocent foreigner on one of its buses or trains, confirming the kill with a barrage of bullets at close range in a mistaken effort to thwart a bombing, the UN would probably have been sitting in emergency session by late afternoon to unanimously denounce the Jewish state. Palestinian Suicide Bomber Caught En Route to Tel Aviv - Amos Harel
Israel Defense Forces soldiers on Friday caught a Palestinian terrorist from Fatah's military wing in Gaza who had crossed the perimeter fence and was en route to carrying out a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. IDF trackers spotted the infiltration and located the bomber in a field more than a kilometer inside Israel. The IDF sector brigade commander, Col. Avi Levy, said the terrorist was wearing a five-kilogram explosives belt which contained nails and metal scraps intended to maximize the force of impact. The terrorist said he had been instructed to blow himself up in a crowded spot in central Tel Aviv. A short while later, police arrested his guide, a Palestinian married to an Israeli Arab, who lives in Jaffa. (Ha'aretz)

Egyptian TV "Experts" Blame Israel for Sharm el-Sheikh Bombings - Khaled Abu Toameh (Jerusalem Post)
Several Egyptian "security experts" and "political analysts" interviewed by Arab TV stations after the Sharm el-Sheikh bombings on Saturday claimed that Israel and Jews were behind the carnage, despite a claim of responsibility by a group tied to al-Qaeda. Similar charges were made against Israel after the suicide attack at the Taba Hilton Hotel in October 2004 and after the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.

Ukrainian party blames Israel for terror
A new Ukrainian political party alleged that the recent terrorist attacks in London were part of a Zionist plan to achieve world domination.

A statement printed in last week’s edition of the Ukrainian Conservative Party’s weekly newspaper said the July 7 attacks in London “showed the presence in world politics of clandestine Zionist organizations,” which, “using common fears, wish to achieve their main goal, world domination.” The Ukrainian Conservative Party is headed by Georgy Schokin, president of MAUP, a private university known for its links to anti-Semitism.

The party was established earlier this year to run in Ukraine’s parliamentary elections, slated for next spring.

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE JEWS....

And Then They Came After Us by Victor Davis Hanson
First the terrorists of the Middle East went after the Israelis. From 1967 we witnessed 40 years of bombers, child murdering, airline hijacking, suicide murdering, and gratuitous shooting. We in the West usually cried crocodile tears, and then came up with all sorts of reasons to allow such Middle Eastern killers a pass.

Yasser Arafat, replete with holster and rants at the U.N., had become a “moderate” and was thus free to steal millions of his good-behavior money. If Hamas got European cash, it would become reasonable, ostracize its “military wing,” and cease its lynching and vigilantism.

When some tried to explain that Wars 1-3 (1947, 1956, 1967) had nothing to do with the West Bank, such bothersome details fell on deaf ears. When it was pointed out that Germans were not blowing up Poles to get back lost parts of East Prussia nor were Tibetans sending suicide bombers into Chinese cities to recover their country, such analogies were caricatured. When the call for a “Right of Return” was making the rounds, few cared to listen that over a half-million forgotten Jews had been cleansed from Syria, Iraq, and Egypt, and lost billions in property. When the U.N. and the EU talked about “refugee camps,” none asked why for a half-century the Arab world could not build decent housing for its victimized brethren, or why 1 million Arabs voted in Israel, but not one freely in any Arab country.

The security fence became “The Wall,” and evoked slurs that it was analogous to barriers in Korea or Berlin that more often kept people in than out. Few wondered why Arabs who wished to destroy Israel would mind not being able to live or visit Israel. In any case, anti-Semitism, oil, fear of terrorism — all that and more fooled us into believing that Israel’s problems were confined to Israel. So we ended up with a utopian Europe favoring a pre-modern, terrorist-run, Palestinian thugocracy over the liberal democracy in Israel. The Jews, it was thought, stirred up a hornet’s nest, and so let them get stung on their own.

We in the United States preened that we were the “honest broker.” After the Camp David accords we tried to be an intermediary to both sides, ignoring that one party had created a liberal and democratic society, while the other remained under the thrall of a tribal gang. Billions of dollars poured into frontline states like Jordan and Egypt. Arafat himself got tens of millions, though none of it ever seemed to show up in good housing, roads, or power plants for his people. The terror continued, enhanced rather than arrested, by Western largess and Israeli concessions.

Then the Islamists declared war on the United States. A quarter century of mass murdering of Americans followed in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, East Africa, the first effort to topple the World Trade Center, and the attack on the USS Cole. We gave billions to Jordan, the Palestinians, and the Egyptians. Afghanistan was saved from the Soviets through U.S. aid. Kuwait was restored after Saddam’s annexation, and the holocaust of Bosnians and Kosovars halted by the American Air Force. Americans welcomed thousands of Arabs to our shores and allowed hundreds of madrassas and mosques to preach zealotry, anti-Semitism, and jihad without much scrutiny.

Then came September 11 and the almost instant canonization of bin Laden.

Suddenly, the prior cheap shots at Israel under siege weren’t so cheap. It proved easy to castigate Israelis who went into Jenin, but not so when we needed to do the same in Fallujah. It was easy to slander the Israelis’ scrutiny of Arabs in their midst, but then suddenly a few residents in our own country were found to be engaging in bomb making, taking up jihadist pilgrimages to Afghanistan, and mapping out terrorist operations. Apparently, the hatred of radical Islam was not just predicated on the “occupation” of the West Bank. Instead it involved the pretexts of Americans protecting Saudi Arabia from another Iraqi attack, the United Nations boycott of Iraq, the removal of the Taliban and Saddam, and always as well as the Crusades and the Reconquista.

But Europe was supposedly different. Unlike the United States, it was correct on the Middle East, and disarmed after the Cold War. Indeed, the European Union was pacifistic, socialist, and guilt-ridden about former colonialism. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims were left alone in unassimilated European ghettoes and allowed to preach or promulgate any particular hatred of the day they wished. Conspire to kill a Salmon Rushdie, talk of liquidating the “apes and pigs,” distribute Mein Kampf and the Protocols, or plot in the cities of France and Germany to blow up the Pentagon and the World Trade Center — all that was about things “over there” and in a strange way was thought to ensure that Europe got a pass at home.

But the trump card was always triangulation against the United States. Most recently anti-Americanism was good street theater in Rome, Paris, London, and the capitals of the “good” West. But then came Madrid — and the disturbing fact that after the shameful appeasement of its withdrawal from Iraq, further plots were hatched against Spanish justices and passenger trains. Surely a Holland would be exempt — Holland of wide-open Amsterdam fame where anything goes and Muslim radicals could hate in peace. Then came the butchering of Theo Van Gogh and the death threats against parliamentarian Hirsi Ali — and always defiance and promises of more to come rather than apologies for their hatred.

Yet was not Britain different? After all, its capital was dubbed Londonistan for its hospitality to Muslims across the globe. Radical imams openly preached jihad against the United States to their flock as thanks for being given generous welfare subsidies from her majesty’s government. But it was the United States, not liberal Britain, that evoked such understandable hatred.

But now? After Holland, Madrid, and London, European operatives go to Israel not to harangue Jews about the West Bank, but to receive tips about preventing suicide bombings. And the cowboy Patriot Act to now-panicked European parliaments perhaps seems not so illiberal after all.

So it is was becoming clear that butchery by radical Muslims in Bali, Darfur, Iraq, the Philippines Thailand, Turkey, Tunisia, and Iraq was not so tied to particular and “understandable” Islamic grievances. Perhaps the jihadist killing was not over the West Bank or U.S. hegemony after all, but rather symptoms of a global pathology of young male Islamic radicals blaming all others for their own self-inflicted miseries, convinced that attacks on the infidel would win political concessions, restore pride, and prove to Israelis, Europeans, Americans — and about everybody else on the globe — that Middle Eastern warriors were full of confidence and pride after all.

Meanwhile an odd thing happened. It turns out that the jihadists were cowards and bullies, and thus selective in their targets of hatred. A billion Chinese were left alone by radical Islam — even though the Chinese were secularists and mostly godless, as well as ruthless to their own Uighur Muslim minorities. Had bin Laden issued a fatwa against Beijing and slammed an airliner into a skyscraper in Shanghai, there is no telling what a nuclear China might have done.

India too got mostly a pass, other than the occasional murdering by Pakistani zealots. Yet India makes no effort to apologize to Muslims. When extremists occasionally riot and kill, they usually cease quickly before the response of a much more unpredictable angry populace.

What can we learn from all this? Jihadists hardly target particular countries for their “unfair” foreign policies, since nations on five continents suffer jihadist attacks and thus all apparently must embrace an unfair foreign policy of some sort. Typical after the London bombing is the ubiquitous Muslim spokesman who when asked to condemn terrorism, starts out by deploring such killing, assuring that it has nothing to do with Islam, yet then ending by inserting the infamous “but” — as he closes with references about the West Bank, Israel, and all sorts of mitigating factors. Almost no secular Middle Easterners or religious officials write or state flatly, “Islamic terrorism is murder, pure and simple evil. End of story, no ifs or buts about it.”

Second, thinking that the jihadists will target only Israel eventually leads to emboldened attacks on the United States. Assuming America is the only target assures terrorism against Europe. Civilizations will either hang separately or triumph over barbarism together. It is that simple — and past time for Europe and the United States to rediscover their common heritage and shared aims in eradicating this plague of Islamic fascism.

Third, Islamicists are selective in their attacks and hatred. So far global jihad avoids two billion Indians and Chinese, despite the fact that their countries are far tougher on Muslims than is the United States or Europe. In other words, the Islamicists target those whom they think they can intimidate and blackmail.Unfettered immigration, billions in cash grants to Arab autocracies, alliances of convenience with dictatorships, triangulation with Middle Eastern patrons of terror, blaming the Jews — civilization has tried all that. It is time to relearn the lessons from the Cold War, when we saw millions of noble Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, and Czechs as enslaved under autocracy and a hateful ideology, and in need of democracy before they could confront the Communist terror in their midst. But until the Wall fell, we did not send billions in aid to their Eastern European dictatorships nor travel freely to Prague or Warsaw nor admit millions of Communist-ruled Bulgarians and Albanians onto our shores.

IRRATIONAL RATIONALIZATIONS

These Men are Fanatics and Must be Beaten - Editorial
The Islamists will not be satisfied with the American withdrawal from Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan or Iraq, the Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza, or the Russian withdrawal from Chechnya. To the Islamist, these are merely restitutions, the recovery of what is deemed to be rightfully Islamic. The real project is the extension of the Islamic territory across the globe, and the establishment of a worldwide "caliphate" founded on sharia law and the temporal reign of ayatollahs and imams. The fanatics must be defeated. (Telegraph-UK)

Giving the Hatemongers No Place to Hide - Thomas L. Friedman
After every major terrorist incident, the excuse makers come out to tell us why imperialism, Zionism, colonialism, or Iraq explains why the terrorists acted. These excuse makers are just one notch less despicable than the terrorists and also deserve to be exposed. When you live in an open society like London, where anyone with a grievance can publish an article, run for office, or start a political movement, the notion that blowing up a busload of innocent civilians in response to Iraq is somehow "understandable" is outrageous. There is no political justification for 9/11, 7/7, or 7/21. (New York Times)

When Denial Can Kill - Irshad Manji
Three years ago I asked the political leader of Islamic Jihad in Gaza: "What's the difference between suicide, which the Koran condemns, and martyrdom?" "Suicide," he replied, "is done out of despair. But remember: most of our martyrs today were very successful in their earthly lives." The London bombers had immigrant parents who had worked hard to make something of themselves and several of the 9/11 hijackers came from wealthy families. While our spokesmen assure us that Islam is an innocent bystander in today's terrorism, those who commit terrorist acts often tell us otherwise. For too long, we Muslims have been sticking fingers in our ears and chanting "Islam means peace" to drown out the negative noise from our holy book. Far better to own up to it. (TIME)

Why Do They Hate Us? - Olivier Roy
Are the roots of Islamic terrorism in the Middle Eastern conflicts? If the answer is yes, the solution is simple to formulate, although not to achieve: leave Afghanistan and Iraq, solve the Israel-Palestine conflict. But if the answer is no, as I suspect it is, we should look deeper into the radicalization of young, Westernized Muslims. In justifying its terrorist attacks by referring to Iraq, al-Qaeda is looking for popularity or at least legitimacy among Muslims. But this is largely propaganda, and Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Palestinians are hardly the motivating factors behind its global jihad.

First, let's consider the chronology. The Americans went to Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11, not before. From the beginning, al-Qaeda's fighters were global jihadists, and their favored battlegrounds have been outside the Middle East: Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, and Kashmir. Abdullah Azzam, bin Laden's mentor, gave up supporting the PLO long before his death in 1989 because he felt that to fight for a localized political cause was to forsake the real jihad, which he felt should be international and religious in character. (New York Times)

DON'T LOOK FOR ECONOMIC MIRACLE IN GAZA

Anticipating Withdrawal - Martin Peretz
The brutal forward history is that Gaza will remain backward, even though a group of American investors will invest between $300 and $500 million in its industry. To be sure, the EU and the U.S. will invest, too, and make loans, and even insist on the probity of accounting procedures. But a population that has lulled itself into living off the UN refugee dole and blamed all its misfortunes on the Jews for more than a half-century is not likely to stir itself from its misery. Gaza and its miseries, like the miseries of the whole Arab world, are mainly self-inflicted. (New Republic)

WORLD'S OLDEST MARRIED COUPLE IS JEWISH

Happily ever after
The world’s oldest married couple is Jewish. Philadelphia residents Herbert and Magda Brown, 105 and 100, respectively, have been recognized as the “oldest living married couple, aggregate age” by The Guinness Book of World Records. Magda attributes her long time with Herbert to communication. “He is very easy-going, I am the strong one,” she told Reuters in an interview. “We never argued, we just had discussions.”

The couple married in Magda’s native Hungary in 1930 and then moved to Austria, Herbert’s homeland, where he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Dachau. Herbert was released in exchange for all of the family’s possessions, and he, Magda and their only daughter fled to London, later making their way to the United States.

PALI ROCKET KILLS PALI KID

A Palestinian rocket fired at Israel fell short, killing a Palestinian boy in the Gaza Strip. There was no claim of responsibility for the rocket that struck a home in Khan Younis on Thursday, killing the boy and seriously wounding his brother. The Palestinian Authority, whose security forces have clashed with Hamas terrorists as part of a burgeoning power struggle in Gaza, said the deadly salvo proved the P.A. contention that rocket fire “harmed the national cause.”

During an interview aired July 11, 2005 by Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV, retired Lebanese general and public relations expert Dr. Hisham Jaber discussed "global Zionism" and its purported hand in 9/11 and the recent London bombings. According to his curriculum vitae, Dr. Jaber, a Lebanese national who is founder and president of The Middle East Center for Studies and Public Relations, attended military studies during the 1960s in Lebanon and France. During the 1970s, he studied at the American Defense Information School at Difnos, Indiana, U.S; at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, U.S.; and at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, U.S.

Also during the 1970s, he headed the Psychological Action Bureau at Lebanese Army headquarters. In the early 1980s, Dr. Jaber headed the Link Office of the U.S. forces and the Lebanese army. From 1997 to 2000, he was military commander of the Beirut region.

Absolutely not. A force greater than Al-Qaeda was behind these events. Whenever an ordinary crime takes place, the question is 'who benefits?' – let alone when the crime is of such huge proportions. What happened in Britain, and why Britain, of all places?

"The perpetrator [of these acts] believes that he carried out an operation in retaliation for the oppression afflicted upon the world's wretched people by Western policies, and especially by the U.S. and Britain. This is what he believes. In addition, I say that the actual perpetrator – the person who actually commits a suicide operation – is not a mercenary, but may have been tricked into it.

"So who is the planner? The planner who is behind him is the one who benefits from what happens. We all know that after 9/11 the persecution of Muslims began in the U.S. and Europe, but later subsided, to a certain extent. For three or four years, we have been concerned – in the wake of these painful events – about the possibility of some sort of annihilation, or perhaps an unbalanced civil war in Europe and the U.S. between Muslims and non-Muslims, or let's say, the Westerners.

"Zionism Has Forged The New Testament; 60 Million In The U.S. Alone Have Left Christianity To Become Believers In The Torah"

"It is global Zionism that stands to gain the most from this.

"Regardless of the logic of conspiracy, I would like to say something. We read history, and we know that since The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, Zionism has forged the New Testament – and by now, 60 million in the U.S. alone have left Christianity to become believers in the Torah.

"Global Zionism has tried to forge the Holy Koran, and has printed many copies of this forgery. It has been discovered that many extremist movements were backed by [global Zionism]."

IMAN OF HATE

Leading Saudi Imam: Liberate Al-Aqsa, Punish Zionists and Infidels (MEMRI)
Sheikh Abd Al-Rahman Al-Sudayyis, imam of Islam's most holy mosque, Al-Haram in Mecca, holds one of the most prestigious posts in Sunni Islam. In his Friday sermon of July 15, 2005, Sheikh Al-Sudayyis said: "Oh Allah, liberate our Al-Aqsa Mosque from the defilement of the occupying and brutal Zionists....Oh Allah, punish the occupying Zionists and their supporters from among the corrupt infidels. Oh Allah, scatter and disperse them, and make an example of them for those who take heed."

MEDIA BLOOD LIBEL AGAINST ISRAEL

Unreliable Palestinian 'Witnesses' (HonestReporting)
The latest case of media outlets disseminating a false claim of Israeli malevolenceThe unreliability of Palestinian sources has long undermined the integrity of Mideast media coverage. In April 2002, Palestinian 'eyewitness' reports of an Israeli 'massacre' and 'mass graves' in Jenin were immediately transmitted and amplified around the world, but were later proven to be completely false.

This problem is still very much with us. Last month, AP and Reuters reported Palestinian prisoners' claims that their Israeli guards tore up copies of the Koran to humiliate them. A Palestinian prisoner later admitted that she herself did the ripping.

Yesterday (July 20) Reuters, relying on unnamed Palestinian witnesses, reported that 'Jewish settlers stabbed a Palestinian boy to death in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.' The accusation gained traction when The New York Times included the Reuters report in its own daily dispatch. But today it's become clear that the boy's assailants were Palestinian. Haaretz reported:

Palestinians initially claimed the boy was stabbed during a violent clash with settlers... Later, however, senior Palestinian figures told Israel Defense Forces figures the boy was likely murdered within the context of a clan feud.

Reuters itself now reports senior Palestinian officials acknowledging that 'there is no evidence that settlers were behind the stabbing.' [UPDATE: Palestinian police have arrested a Palestinian suspect in the murder.]

So we have yet another case of dubious Palestinian claims unquestionably disseminated by the western media, but later proven false. Of course, the false version remains part of the public record, and for one who doesn't see the correction, the fabrication is the only version that sticks. Media monitors EyeOnThePost caught a similar case this week, when the Washington Post reported that 'more than a dozen bystanders were killed [by IDF fire], according to [Palestinian] hospital officials'. That report was never substantiated, never repeated elsewhere ― and never corrected by the Post.

Joshua Muravchik notes in his book, Covering the Intifada: How the Media Reported the Palestinian Uprising:

Journalists seem to follow a canon that says when two sides are fighting, it is their obligation to report equally and with equal credence what is said by each. But the quality of the information provided by the two sides in this conflict is highly asymmetrical. By this I mean simply that the Palestinians repeatedly lie.

The time has come for the major news outlets to institute a mandatory fact-checking period before promulgating dubious claims from Palestinian 'eyewitnesses' of supposed Israeli outrages.

The other issue here is the further erosion of Reuters' credibility. This highly influential media outlet ― whose staff members were caught last week cavorting with a Jenin terrorist in a 'gag film' ― consistently demonstrates an eagerness to function as a pro-Palestinian mouthpiece.

INSURANCE FIRMS FROWN ON TRAVEL TO ISRAEL

BUT WILL THEY INSURE YOU IF YOU TRAVEL TO LONDON?

Insurance Firms Frown on Travel to Israel - Jim DeFede
Earlier this year, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz wanted to increase her life insurance. Her husband, Steve, received a phone call from their insurance agent, asking if his wife was planning any trips. ''There is a possibility she might go to Israel,'' he said. Two weeks later she received a letter from the American General Life Insurance Company: "We were unable to approve the policy because of potential travel to Israel."

Wasserman Schultz said she was dumbfounded. ''To put Israel in the same category as Iraq is nothing short of discrimination,'' she said. ''Their death rate through intentional injury is actually lower than the U.S.,'' she said, citing a recent Business Week article that noted there were 17 homicides per 100,000 people in the U.S. in 2002, compared with just 11 in Israel. JOE LIEBERMAN'S BEARD

Lieberman honors his mother with a new look by Tori Katz (MEDILL NEWS SERVICE )WASHINGTON(JULY 12)-- With longer hair and a white beard, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., appeared at a press conference Tuesday, his second day back at work since the death of his mother, to argue as passionately as ever for increased funding for homeland security. Any hint of grief over the recent death of his mother was masked by his passion for national defense. Despite the new beard and hairstyle, Lieberman hardly looked disheveled, though scruffy enough that his appearance elicited a few raised eyebrows and whispers in the crowd.

For the past two weeks Lieberman has been without a shave or a haircut. And for the next two weeks the normally clean-cut senator will continue to follow a Jewish custom that prohibits such grooming for 30 days following the burial of a loved one. While witnesses on Capitol Hill have unknowingly quipped about the senator’s new “masculine look,” their ignorance of this deep-rooted Jewish custom is likely to be shared even by members of the Jewish community.

Lieberman is observing a period of mourning called shloshim, the Hebrew word for 30. During this time he cannot listen to music, attend parties, shave or cut his hair.

ISRAEL PUNISHED FOR HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM

Terrorists ´reunified´ with family
One in nine Palestinians who carried out terrorist attacks during the intifada had received Israeli residency under family-reunification arrangements, a top Israeli security official said. Yuval Diskin, who heads Israel’s Shin Bet security service, testified Monday before a Knesset committee that is considering changes to a law that grants permanent-resident status to some West Bank Palestinians with relatives in Israel. Ha’aretz quoted Diskin as telling the closed committee that 99 percent of terrorists are men between the ages of 16 and 35 and women under the age of 25. Palestinians in those age groups are barred from receiving permanent residence, he said. Critics say that it’s racist to place restrictions on Palestinian family reunification.

ISRAEL PROVIDES MEDICAL CARE TO IRAQI CHILDREN

Iraqis take heart -- from Israel
Five Iraqi children with defective hearts received treatment in Israel. The patients and their families came to the Jewish state in recent weeks with the sponsorship of the Save A Child’s Heart foundation, and were treated at the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon. Two children remain hospitalized and the rest have returned to Iraq. Save A Child’s Heart provides urgently needed pediatric heart surgery and follow-up care for children from Third World and developing countries.

DOES IT STRIKE ANYONE (POSSIBLY IN THE MEDIA?) AS IRONIC THAT ISRAEL'S ENEMIES ARE FIRING ROCKETS AT ISRAELI CHILDREN WHILE ISRAEL IS PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE TO ARAB CHILDREN? HOW SOON BEFORE THE ARABS CLAIM THAT ISRAEL IS DOING MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS ON THESE KIDS?

WHAT CEASE-FIRE?

What Cease-Fire? - Barry Rubin
There has been a formal cease-fire since February 2005, but the Palestinian terror war against Israel continues. In the five months between February 8 and July 8, Palestinians carried out 812 attacks on Israeli targets. In thousands more cases attacks were disrupted by Israeli arrests or defensive operations. Nearly half (47%) of these attacks have been claimed by Fatah, the ruling group in the PA, into whose hands the international community now proposes to place $3 billion in aid.

Continuing casualties on the Palestinian side are due to the continuing war conducted by Palestinian political organizations. If the Palestinians stopped all attacks on Israel, Israel would not conduct any operations against the Palestinians. But even when Israel stops all military operations against the Palestinians, the attacks continue. (Jerusalem Post)

PALIS MISSING (ANOTHER) OPPORTUNITY

Palestinians Missing an Opportunity, Again - Yoel Marcus
As we watch the Palestinians acting crazy a month before Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, sending out suicide bombers and shelling Israeli towns, there does seem to be a screw loose somewhere. Sharon's plan for a Gaza pullout should have been welcomed by the Palestinians as the best news that ever came their way. I don't remember them being offered an independent Palestinian state, or the return of any land seized in 1948, when they were living under Jordanian occupation.

Every time Palestinian organizations get into an argument, they shoot at the Jews. In the last four days, more than 100 Kassam rockets and mortar shells have been fired at Israeli settlements. When Sharon says there will be no withdrawal under fire, he doesn't mean that the disengagement will be called off. What he means is that the army will move en masse into Gaza and put out the fire. PALESTINIAN CIVIL WAR (CENSORED BY FATAH)

WHEN 2 TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS FIGHT, WHOM DOES THE INTERNATIONAL MEDIA SIDE WITH? DO EITHER GET LABELLED "TERRORISTS" OR ARE THEY BOTH "MILITANTS" OR "ACTIVISTS"? REGARDLESS, I WISH BOTH SIDES GOOD LUCK.

PA-Hamas Clashes Wound 15 - Arnon Regular
At least 15 Palestinians were wounded Tuesday in clashes between PA security forces and Hamas activists in Jabalya and Gaza City. For the first time, the Palestinian Preventive Security force, headed by Rashid Abu Shabak, deployed armed members of Fatah's Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and units known as "death squads," according to Palestinian sources. The Palestinian police prefers to deploy the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades rather than face a head-on clash with Hamas, which has fielded a group of its own, known as the Murabatun. In Ramallah, Tayeb Abdel Rahim, Abbas's bureau chief, warned that "Hamas is playing with fire and...the PA will have no choice but to defend itself and the national project. If not, only chaos will remain in the Gaza Strip and we will lose everything." (Ha'aretz)
