SHARON UNDERGOES EMERGENCY SURGERY

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's life is not in danger, and his condition has returned to serious but stable, Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem spokesman Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef said Saturday afternoon. "From the standpoint of his present condition, the situation is serious, the situation is stable, the situation is critical, but there is no immediate danger to the life of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon," Mor-Yosef told reporters. Doctors completed a four-hour surgical procedure on Sharon, and moved him into general intensive care several hours earlier. During the procedure, doctors removed a damaged, 50-centimeter length of the premier's large intestine, Mor-Yosef said. He added that Saturday's surgery will set Sharon's recovery process back a couple of days. "Today's surgery didn't improve Sharon's health," Mor-Yosef said. The rest of Sharon's vital signs, including his blood pressure and his pulse, are normal, Mor-Yosef said.

Sharon was rushed into surgery Saturday morning after a CT of his abdomen revealed his digestive tract had been seriously damaged, said a spokeswoman for the hospital, Yael Bossem-Levy. Earlier Saturday, doctors had said that Sharon's current condition is the most serious since he was admitted to the hospital 39 days ago.
