PALESTINIAN SUES P.A. IN U.S. FOR TORTURE
Palestinian Sues PA in U.S. Court, Says Tortured for Helping Israel (AP/Newsday)
A Palestinian man sued Palestinian authorities Thursday, saying he was tortured after he helped Israel prevent terrorist attacks on its citizens by Palestinian militants. The lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan says Ali Mahmud Ali Shafi was kidnapped on Sept. 22, 2001, in PA-controlled territory and tortured for six months. Shafi lived in the West Bank town of Kalkilya until 1994, when he moved to Haifa. Before moving to Israel, he helped the Israeli General Security Services prevent terrorist attacks on its citizens. In September 2001, he returned to Kalkilya so his daughter could visit her grandmother. Members of the Palestinian security service arrived and took him to headquarters, where he was stripped, handcuffed and beaten, and hot salt water was poured onto his wounds, the lawsuit says.
