As the British "government publishes its annual arms export figures, the Liberal Democrats have called on the prime minister to halt any further shipments of military equipment to Israel," ePolitix.com reports (via reader Dave Cole).

Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell has written to Tony Blair saying that in light of the escalating violence in the Middle East, the UK should suspend the sale of arms to Israel until the conflict is resolved.

So the Lib Dems want to ensure Israel can't protect itself from terrorism? Whom do the Lib Dems cite in support of their call?

"Kofi Annan has said attacks in Lebanon are inflicting collective punishment on the Lebanese people and the UN emergency relief co-ordinator has described attacks on Beirut as a 'violation of humanitarian law'.

Lost on Kofi and the Campbell is that Israel is not deliberately targeting civilians, it's Hezbollah that is deliberately endangering Lebanese civilians.

"Hospitals in Israel have treated 1,293 people who were injured in rocket attacks since the fighting on the country's northern border began 12 days ago," Ynetnews reports. These are civilians deliberately targeted by terrorists, as opposed to civilians hit because terrorists use them for cover.

Israel's population is 6.4 million. America's population is 298.4 million. 1,293 injured Israelis is comparable to more than 60,000 Americans being injured.
