Black Muslim leader Farrakhan discloses illness
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, 73, has suffered new health problems relating to earlier diagnosed prostate cancer and has canceled all engagements, he said in a letter published on the Web site of his church.

"I have been suffering from the after-effects of an extremely high dose of radiated seed implantation that indeed killed the cancer cells that had broken the prostate capsule, but over time, these seeds have done severe internal damage," he said in the letter dated September 11 and published online at http://www.noi.org.

"I am more than fortunate. I am blessed by Allah to be alive," he added.

Farrakhan, who once called Judaism a "gutter religion" and later said his comments were simply misinterpreted street talk, was a driving force behind the 1995 million-man march on Washington.

During a recent rip to Cuba, he said in the letter, doctors discovered an anal ulcer "similar to the ulcer that I had in 1998-1999 that almost caused the loss of my life."
