BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE U.N. DURING HOLOCAUST RES. DEBATE
101 Co-Sponsors and Iran Speaks Out Against it (NYSun)
... sources at the U.N. tell us. (On the Holocaust Resolution.)
Update: Sources at the U.N. tell us that the resolution passed by consensus. Iran spoke about a 'Palestinian Holocaust.'
Update II: Sources tell us that Venezuela supported the resolution, but tried to compare what is going on Iraq to the Holocaust.
Update III: Sources tell us that Iran was the only "no" vote. South Africa was a no show.
Update IV: Ambassador Alejandro D. Wolff, Acting U.S. Permanent Representative, said:
The terrible events of the Holocaust are deeply disturbing and will always remain so. It was one of the most tragic moral catastrophes in the history of humankind. We remember it, indeed we must remember it, to ensure that such events are never repeated. Those who would deny the Holocaust--and, sadly, there are some who do--reveal not only their ignorance but their moral failure as well.
Update V: The Ambassador also said:
Iran successfully demonstrated its extremism. The United States strongly supports this Resolution that condemns without reservation any denial of the Holocaust. This Assembly should be proud of adopting today's Resolution by consensus. It is shameful that one country decided to reject that consensus.
Tomorrow will be the 62nd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp where over 1 million people were murdered. To this day, Auschwitz serves as a powerful symbol of what can happen when tyranny and oppression go unchecked. As we mourn those who lost their lives, we must, as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted, "reassert our commitment to human rights" which was "desecrated at Auschwitz and by genocides and atrocities since."
