U.S. TO PAY HUNGARIAN HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS FOR LOOTED PROPERTY
´Gold Train´ case settled
The U.S. government agreed to pay $25.5 million to Hungarian Holocaust survivors whose property was looted by the American military.
The settlement was reached Thursday, and includes $25 million to cover basic humanitarian services for the survivors, as well as $500,000 for creation of an archive of the Hungarian Jewish community and the Gold Train.
None of the plaintiffs will receive individual restitution money. The property of Hungarian Jews was looted by Nazis and loaded onto boxcars to be transported to Germany.
The U.S. military seized the train, but almost none of the property was returned to the owners. The settlement requires approval by a Florida federal judge, and objections may still be heard.
