JEWISH MP LOSES HER SEAT
British Jewish legislator ousted
A Jewish member of Britain’s Parliament lost her seat to a maverick pro-Palestinian candidate.
In polls Thursday that brought Prime Minister Tony Blair to power for an unprecedented third term, Oona King lost the eastern London constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow, which has a large Muslim population, to former Laborite George Galloway. Galloway, who ran as a candidate for his own anti-war Respect party, toppled King after attacking her support for the effort to topple Saddam Hussein.
King, who is black and Jewish, had accused some Galloway supporters of anti-Semitism after an egg-throwing incident at a memorial to Jewish war dead during the campaign. (SEE: MUSLIMS THROW EGGS AT JEWISH M.P. , APRIL 11, 2005)
